About the Author
Ronald L. Fournier is a professor in the Department of Bioengineering at The University of Toledo. He is also the founding chair of the Department of Bioengineering. During his twenty years at Toledo, he has taught a variety of chemical engineering and bioengineering subjects to include courses in biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering transport phenomena, biomedical engineering design, and artificial organs. His research interests and scholarly publications are in the areas of bioartificial organs, tissue engineering, novel bioreactors, and pharmacokinetics.

Prof. Fournier is on the editorial review board of Technology and Healthcare in the International Journal of Health Care Engineering. He is a research journal reviewer for the following journals: AIChE Journal, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biomaterials, Cell Transplantation, Tissue Engineering, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry, and Enzyme & Microbial Technology. Prof. Fournier is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, Cell Transplantation Society, Biomedical Engineering Society, American Society of Engineering Education, and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering.

It's a text book

What can I say, odds are you have to buy this whether you like it or not. In the off chance that you don't this one of the better Engineering text books. One huge thing is that it has a list of variables in the beginning of the book. This is NOT common in engineering text books and is a great help, especially if you are forgetful like me. It included examples that, while helpful, did not always explain their logical leaps or assumptions.

Superb recounting of financial panics throughout U.S. history

Excellent resource for understanding the motivations and details of U.S. financial panics past. Look for the 1988 editon that includes commentary on the 1987 Crash: ISBN 0-525-48404-3. Later edition is simply a reprint of the original 1968 text without this information. Also highly recommended: Devil Take the Hindmost by Edward Chancellor and Dying of Money by Jens Parsson (long out-of-print) for the hyperinflatiory events of Weimar Republic, Germany.

A Concise History of Economic Depressions

Panic on Wall Street, Robert Sobel

Robert Sobel is an assistant professor of history at Hofstra University and has written other books. The `Conclusions' of this 1968 book lists the many causes blamed for financial panics (or depressions). Most are symptoms of the problem, which is a lack of money to buy what people want. This can be caused by crop failure (the weather), war (its destruction), or plague (sick or dead people consume less). A mismatch between production and consumption is the obvious symptom ("under-consumption"). While human error can account for some of these, all people are not fools. [Or so I assume.] Can a totally managed society prevent this? Yes (on paper). But every plan has a flaw: it is based on the past and does not address the changes that have occurred since the plan was written. It can't account for fickleness in popular tastes.

Is it caused by a lack of knowledge of conditions or optimism (p.409)? Sobel blames "weaknesses in the financial structure", yet the Federal Reserve did nothing to prevent the Savings & Loan crisis of the 1980s, the High-Tech Stock scams or bubble in the 1990s, or the destruction in manufacturing that followed NAFTA in the late 1990s. This destroyed more industry than by enemy action during the World Wars. The Federal Reserve System helped to cause the Great Depression after 1929 (they did not prevent bank runs as in England). When there is an economic depression small businesses are likely to fail, their loss of customers is a gain for big businesses. Now that small businesses are mostly destroyed by the Fed's policies who can be sacrificed now? Small grocery stores are mostly a distant memory, so too many mid-size manufacturers. "A Note on Sources" lists the many books that go into more details. The "General Bibliography" lists all the books by author order.

The `Contents' list the twelve panics. It can not list the problems that followed Nixon's devaluation of the dollar in 1971. Could a newer edition cover the last forty tumultuous years?
1) "William Duer and the Panic of 1792" resulted from speculation in bank stocks whose value declined.
2) "The Crisis of Jacksonian Finances:1837" resulted from land speculation paid for by paper money (bank notes).
3) "The Western Blizzard of 1857" followed a drop in gold and cotton production that affected the economy.
4) "The Circus Comes to Town: 1865-69" tells about the free market in stock speculation. Jay Gould tried to corner the gold market but failed.
5) "Crisis of the Gilded Age: 1873" tells about overproduction of wheat and falling prices that impoverished farmers, railroads, and steel production.
6) "Grant's Last Panic: 1884" resulted from falling prices and bankruptcies that spread like a chain reaction.

7) "Grover Cleveland and the Ordeal of 1893-1895" occurred during the worst economic depression of the 19th century for the farmers and miners of America (p.235).
8) "The Struggle of the Titans: the Northern Pacific Corner of 1901" resulted from speculation on the market that led to failures.

9) "The Knickerbocker Trust Panic of 1907" followed attempts to corner the copper market (p.309). Bank runs and bankruptcies resulted.
10) "The Year the Stock Market Closed: 1914" followed the start of the war in Europe and the withdrawal of cash from banks (p.335) and the loss of trade (p.339).
11) "1929: The Making of the Myth" marked a turning point in American history. The farm situation was weak (p.353), credit purchases increased, and stock prices were rising due to margin accounts (p.356). Some foresaw a terrific crash (p.367). The Federal Reserve raised its rate for borrowed money (p.368). The crash came in October 1929.
12) "The Kennedy Slide: 1962" tells how much money went into bonds rather than stocks because of low yields (p.407). A belief of lower returns affected stocks (p.411). There was a 27% loss in paper values.

Nicola lives in the beautiful city of Christchurch, which the Lonely Planet named one of the top ten cities to visit in 2013. Although it is a city which has much that still needs to be demolished and rebuilt, it is a city of triumph and innovation. A city besieged with art and creativity. The stunning Avon River still winds through the city centre and the blossom has still bloomed despite all the tragedy that this city has seen during the past few years. In Her Long Goodbye Mia speaks of the unshakeable true beauty of Christchurch, a beauty that the earthquakes could never rob from the city. Nicola began writing Her Long Goodbye in 2009; but had to shelf it several times due to inspiration interrupts because of the ongoing earthquakes, several long overseas holidays and developing repetitive strain injury. Early in 2012, she started on a second novel, but shelved it after a couple of chapters due to the time commitment of getting Her Long Goodbye ready for publication, which was finally released on Amazon in January 2013. Her Waiting List was published the following year. Nicola is currently working on the third and final book in the romance trilogy, titled Her Long Wait. Anticipated release is 2016. For fun (aside from writing) Nicola enjoys playing squash, designing mosaics, watching cricket and league, as well as serving in her local church.

Amazingly written book, I love how Nicola has written scenes so descriptively you feel like you're there. If you want a book that will make you feel something, that you can relate to and will keep you glued. This is a great choice.

Overall good work, with holes

Capt does an excellent job tracing the 10 "lost tribes" of Israel into the European continent, citing recovered antiquities and more recent discoveries in existing collections, such as at the British Museum, covering dates up to roughly 150 BC. Likewaise, he seems to give an adequate account of the origin of the basic European "tribes" such as the Germans, the various Celts, etc., picking up their story ca. AD 600.
Where Capt falls short is in the linkage between the two eras. He has very little to connect the two--there are missing centuries in between. Well yes, he does make the linkage, but it is thin compared to the rest of the work. Just when, for example, did the Scythians become Franks? I would like to see a stronger case made for that transistional period.
However, having said that, his explanation of the migration of hte "lost tribes" is excellent. He provides solid documentation even though this book is aimed at a general "Biblical" audience rather than an academic audience of professional archeologists or geographers or such. While he does not use footnotes, the majority of his claims are noted in the text itself. He also supplies a good bibliography, various lists and tables, and other reference material at the end of the text.

Filling in the holes of history.....

Biblical archaeologists have always been the "black sheep" in historical circles. They, and their researches, are given validity only if their theories and subsequent proofs discredit the divine aspect of the Hebrew and Christian holy books. E. Raymond Capt is the single, most powerful ally of an accurate view of history, a history recognizing the Hebrew peoples as contributors to, and often catalysts of, world events.
The focus of this book is the migration paths of the twelve tribes of Israel. Documentation includes passages translated from existing and catalogued Assyrian and Babylonian tablets and an in-depth study of regional languages that track the various paths of the Hebrew peoples. Other reviewers have suggested that this book raises more questions than it answers. In truth, this book seeks to answer no questions. It seeks to bring into sharp focus the proofs that currently exist to accurately track the Hebrew peoples.
This book is a must for every student of history. Period

Where did the ten tribes of Israel disappear to? This book gives solid support for the wanderings and the destinies of God's covenant people. Don't wonder any longer. This book is excellent and provides sound supportive evidence to back up its claim. We need more people like E. Raymond Capt who are not afraid to divulge the truth.

About the Author

Barry Tillman: As a human factors engineer, Barry has worked directly with designers, engineering drawings, and software developers for nearly 50 years to achieve safer and more cost-effective human-system interfaces. Barry has been involved with a broad range of systems including coal mining equipment, military vehicles, ships, manufacturing equipment, and space habitats. He has developed human factors analytical tools and written design standards for the military, NASA, and shipping industry. He has also developed and taught numerous human factors engineering and ergonomic courses.�

David J. Fitts: David worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 27 years before retiring in 2015. In his career with NASA he was deeply engaged in the three major human spaceflight programs of his era: the Space Shuttle Program, the International Space Station (ISS) Program, and the next-generation Constellation Program for deep space exploration. During ISS and Constellation development phases, Mr. Fitts served the Agency as the Chief of the Habitability and Human Factors Branch, which focuses on ensuring human capabilities and limitations are strongly integrated into human spaceflight programs’ systems engineering and management processes.�

Wesley E. Woodson (deceased) was president of Man Factors Associates, a human factors consulting firm in El Cajon, CA. �Experienced in both military and domestic systems and product design in a broad range of applications, he was the author of the first edition of Human Factor Design Handbook: Human Engineering Guide for Equipment Designers (University of California Press, 1964).

Another great novel in a wonderful series!

The characters are scattered and each is facing a horrible fate and then things get worse for our heroes! I have been following the Brotherhood of the Griffon Series since The Haunted Lands Trilogy and Richard Lee Beyers delivers again with a fantastic tale of heroes struggling against villains, both undead and still breathing, who believe that they are in the right. The Eminence of Araunt make for compelling villains and I hope that they are expanded upon again in lore or in another novel. What can I say Beyer creates complelling characters....both the undead and still living.

The character development that takes place amongst the story is truly rewarding, especially to those who have been following the series, it is nice to see an author revisiting his work but not making you reread his previous novels to understand the significance of it. The land of Rashemen is described wonderfully as a blending points between different dimensions and this all comes into play during the destructive climax where the heroes are not only fighting for their lives but the fate of the land itself.

The book is not only death and destruction, during the calm between the clash of blades you will find yourself laughing at the characters interactions as they struggle with protocol in an unknown land. I think Aoth has the best line of the entire novel if not the last two books but I cannot spoil that. Aoth was able to thwart the mad plans of the undead before with his comrades but without his army and only a few allies the stakes are higher and victory can only be determined by reading this wonderful novel!

Amazing writing, great action scenes

This entire series is amazing. This series is full of encounters with the undead, and really expands on the undead culture instead of them being just a horde of mindless monsters. Fascinating ground which few other fantasy fiction novels have broken.

More undead to be killed by The Brotherhood

I absolutely love these books-The Brotherhood of the Griffon. When he finished the 'Year of Rogue Dragons' trilogy I didn't know if I'd like these books near as much, but I enjoy them just as much if not more. They have great characters, great conflict, great battles, great villains!!

In this book, the characters are scattered all over Toril (Thay)or the Shadowfell and they each face their own conflicts in returning to each other in time for "the big battle". There's not many new characters introduced in this book which is fine since it's winding down the series and ending some conflicts from previous books. It definitely didn't feel like it was the end of the book series, which I'm okay with. I'd love to see more of the Brotherhood or at least see some of the characters go on to other books. The last 2 books seemed to kind've leave out the rest of the Brotherhood and I'm sure we'd like to know what they've been up to.

Over years of reading Richard Lee Byers books I think I'm on to him now. I think what he does is sit there with a nice D&D Monster Manual (any of the 3rd edition ones will suffice) and he goes through them and puts sticky tabs at the top of the various monsters he wants to put in his books. If you don't believe me-read his books and then go through the 3rd edition book 'Libris Mortis', they're all in there. As a DM, I love that idea. I think he should write a story about a Flumph! ;)

If you're looking for a fun fantasy series to read-start with Byers 'The Haunted Lands Trilogy' and then read the 'Brotherhood of the Griffon' books.

Even for $8.00 not a great book

Being a sign painter I am always on the lookout for font books, both old and new. I bought this book hoping to find some more great classical alphabets to add to my memory, what I found sadly was none of that. The, maybe 2, fonts I found are ones that are super similar to others in the normal industry used fonts, the rest are the style of font that you would barely use on anything, maybe a super stereotypical piece with no knowledge of design incorporated. I highly suggest finding a vintage font book or heck even a calligraphy book instead of this one. Spend a little more and get a LOT more.

Letter design reference book

This is a good reference book with a variety of alphabet and letter designs. It is useful as a supplement to more detailed instructional books which include a supply list, and recommend lettering pens, nips size, stroke sequence or ductus. The book selections are good for drawing and copying letters as a visual exercise.
