One of a kind

There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one. Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Edition is helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doing research should have this book. The examples are extremely useful in facilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis of data.

The best guide to research techniques in the social sciences

Lee gives a six star performance by improving on what was already a five star performance in the third edition before Kerlinger's death.This is a must have book for anyone planning to do statistical analysis ,not only in psychology,but in the social sciences as well(especially economics).For example,Lee points out(pp.265,863)the importance of doing some type of test for goodness of fit(Chi- Square test,etc.)BEFORE a researcher assumes that he can make use of the normal probability distribution as an approximation of the data set at hand.This has not been the case in econometric time series studies of (a) financial markets(financial economics,portfolio analysis)or of(b) real,durable investment over the business cycle.The Black-Scholes equation and the CAPM model,both used as foundations in business finance courses in all countries worldwide, just assumes normality.The famous Keynes-Tinbergen debate about the logical foundations of econometrics in the Economic Journal of 1939-40 reveals that the founders of econometrics did not test the data correctly for normality.Keynes's comments about the necessity to demonstrate the uniformity,homogeneity,and stability of the time series data before any multiple regressions were run was ridiculed as the foolish ,out of date utterances of a once magnificient mind that had deteriorated by the late 1930's.Benoit Mandelbrot's massive data analysis,replicated by many different researchers in many different countries since the early 1970's,shows that the assumption of normality ,underlying statistical price data analysis done by economists in practically all financial markets(stocks,bonds,money,currency,exchange,commodities)over the last 60 years,is all wrong.There is one minor oversite in the fourth edition.There is no discussion of Ellsberg's paradox and/or ambiguous probabilities.Lee does ,of course, discuss Keynes's concept of the weight of the evidence and probabilities that have low weight.Both Lee and Brady had agreed 15 years ago that Keynes's w,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,was practically the same as Ellsberg's rho,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.In real life,most of the probabilities will turn out to be ambiguous(plus being underweighted).In such situations it will not be possible to treat probability according to the Kolmogorov axioms.The experimental-empirical work of Tversky-Kahneman demonstrates that the vast majority of real world decision makers are rational(contrary to the conclusion drawn from the evidence by Tversky-Kahneman)but are working with ambiguous or underweighted probabilities.

Kerlinger and Lee successfully describe scientific research and the process of research methods in details, types of quantitative and experimental studies, reliability and validity tests and so on. It is a great reference books, especially for MBA and PhD students.

Good, but not what it calls itself

This is an interesting book, but it is not, as it calls itself, "a desktop reference of hip vintage guitar amps," unless the definition of "hip" is made so subjective as to be meaningless.

The only amps regarding which this book could be considered a reference are a handful of old Fenders---one brand, and not even all of them. In fact, it only mentions Marshall amps occasionally, and there is practically nothing about Vox, or Ampeg, or Silvertone, much less any of the less-common vintage amps. With a title like this, I expected a book that one could leaf through and learn about vintage amps. This is not that book.

But that's not to say this book doesn't have its good points. The author was an amplifier repairman and builder for many years, and he shares a lot of insights and tricks that I have not seen elsewhere. Most of the information in the book is aimed at, and of greatest use to, somebody who builds, refurbishes or repairs amplifiers, and there are a lot of hobbyists in that category (like me), and not a lot of resources available to them, so this book definitely can be an asset. But again, from the title, it is far from clear that it's for that audience.

And, while Weber was a knowledgeable amp builder, he's not really a writer, and whoever edited this book for the publisher didn't really do much of a job---it's disjointed, and while it contains a lot of good information, it's not really organized. One chunk of the book is reprints of Trainwreck newsletters, presented without any context. And almost half the book is reprinted schematics, most for amps not even mentioned elsewhere in the book. In this book, they are padding, adding heft but not much useful information.

If you build or tinker with amps as a hobby, there's probably a fair amount of information in here that you will find interesting and possibly useful. But if you leave the soldering to somebody else, this book is probably not for you. If you want a reference that will give you some basic information about hip vintage guitar amps, Pittman's "Tube Amp Book" is probably better, although it covers a lot more stuff and doesn't go into great depth. Or, if you're looking for a book that explains how amps work, Hunter's "Guitar Amplifier Handbook" would be better. But if you already have those and you're looking for more, this book might be up your alley.

Rambling but still cool

Let's face it understanding tube amps is really hard. I have a whole bunch of the McGraw Hill texts from the 1950's and really struggle with them because they are uncompromisingly mathematical and dry. The subject is so huge that you can't learn it from just one book. Gerald Weber's knowledge is broad on both the theoretical level and also the nitty gritty detail level. So be patient with him and enjoy the rambling journey towards tube enlightenment.

Disappointed and a bit misled

I bought this not realizing it was limited to 50's and 60's Fenders. True, there are a number of schematics (roughly 3/4 of the book) on many different brands but little if any discussion. I can appreciate Mr. Weber's knowledge and relatively non-technical approach but I think the title should have been narrowed down to Fender tweeds. Also it seems like a plug for his line of Kendrick amplifiers. For those interested in a wide range of vintage amplifiers, I would highly recommend Aspen Pittman's "The Tube Amp Book" instead.

Much better than the first book, but why not just revise the first book?

NOTE: I wrote this review from the perspective of someone who read the first book and then bought this book to learn new things. If you have never read the first book you might find this book more useful than I did. Depending on your level of expertise, however, you might want to buy the first book over this one. Complete beginners will find the first book easier to follow. That being said I find the quality of content and presentation in this book to exceed the first. Therefore, if you are more comfortable with lighting and or would like to take a deep plunge into lighting go with this one. Now for the review

This book is much better than the first book by the same author titled Master Lighting Guide. It offers a more in depth higher quality presentation of studio lighting. Hence, the author attempts to provide the reader with a solid understanding of studio lighting principles. The first section focuses on explaining, with plenty of pictures, the relationship between light physical size and relative size, distance, spread depth, and feathering.

The second section consists of 20 topics or so that put the principles stated above into practice. Some are very unique and new like the inverse relation between specularity and size of softbox or the nature of umbrellas and how they differ from softboxes. That last topic is a full departure from the previous book in which the author leaves the impression that both modifiers -softboxes and umbrellas- are very similar when in reality they are not. Another great topic is about how to position a light meter for proper reading. That topic can eliminate much frustration with aiming light meters.

There are other section that seem to have been pretty much lifted from the previous book like the simulated sunlight topic which offers nothing more than one new but minor technique. A couple other topics don't add much like the topic about Why Strip Lights are so Cool which sounds very cool until you read it and realize that it pretty much adds nothing more than few extra pages to the book.

I think the book is very good, but very short and in a sense comes across as an incomplete work. I can't say the same about the first book which I felt was the opposite, complete in the range of topics but poor in quality of material. I still bought the first book anyway because it was the only available reference at the time. Given this book is short and covers many similar topics, but in a better way, I wonder why the author did not consider adding the new content of this book to the first book in a revised and expanded edition instead of a new book. That would have created a complete and excellent quality book that has no match on the market today.

I recommend the book to advanced amateurs and new professionals but I also recommended checking it in a bookstore first because some might not find it very valuable. It's just not one of those books that you can give full 5 stars and a blind buy it right away recommendation.

One last note: the author refers to softboxes sizes as 4x6 large, 3x4 medium, and 2x3 small. This designation might be confusing for people when they go to buy softboxes based on his recommendation. Many major softboxes manufacturers including Creative Light and Photoflex label 4x6 extra large, 3x4 large, and 2x3 medium. Chimera on the other hand goes by the same designations the author is using.

Perfect introduction to studio lighting

As someone who has been intimidated by this subject and taken refuge in the mantra 'available light is always best' this book was a revelation. I realised recently that most of the portraits I really like had usually employed some type of strobe lighting in a very subtle manner. This book has given me the insight into the techniques that might hopefully elevate my work to a new level.

Grey's Master Lighting and Studio Lighting

As a classroom instructor of photography for twenty years, I appreciate the basic info that Chris Grey has compiled in his two lighting guides. This studio guide was a natural addition to my classroom required reading and reference book collection. Customers should consider his first book "Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers" as "part 1" of this collection.

A Nice Introductory Book to Satellite Meteorology

This is a very good book for atmospheric science and meteorology students and researchers. It includes many topics that are very useful for both educational and research purposes: the orbits of satellites, the instruments they carry, the radiation they detect, and, most importantly, the fundamental atmospheric data that can be retrieved from their observations. I first read this book when I was a graduate student in atmospheric sciences. Most books I have read are concerned with dynamics or physics, which are the classical fields. Very few of them discuss the practical yet not so established topics like satellite meteorology. This book is the most comprehensive one I have ever read that covers this whole new field.

Disappointing, at least for what concerns Northern Mongolia

Not as accurate at usual (if not to say totally inaccurate) at least for what concerns Northern Mongolia and travel arrangements to visit Tsaatan community. If I followed LP advices, I would have neever ever had the chance to reach Tsaatan people and have an incredible experience.

Speech textbook

Cerritos College, Norwalk, California Speech communication department uses this textbook. Their department Chair was student of the author of this textbook. When depart chair was only a grad student at CSUF the professor who helped the department chair of Speech Department with her thesis for graduate degree was the author of this book and at the time Professor at CSUF graduate school. This is great book to learn from. Other than the readings, which I am reading Chapter 4 Keys to Understanding Cultural and Ethnic Identities, it's good to have other activities in class to help digest all the theories from the book with interactions in classroom amongst students.

Well worth a look

I'm teaching a class in intercultural comm that uses another text. Within naming names, I'm really not fond of the other (widely used) book and have been very grateful for the strong comm. focus of this option. Although I'm using it as a supplementary text for developing course materials and lectures, I plan on using this as the assigned text when the opportunity for change arises.
