Clarifying the Mishnaic status of women

Wegner tries to understand the status of woman as given in the Mishnah. Her major point is that it is by and large determined by her sexual status. A minor girl is under the authority of her father, a married woman under that of her husband. The father can sell the daughter to her prospective husband. The wife must undergo the trial of 'Sotah' at suspicion of infidelity, whereas there is no such demand of the husband.

Wenger claims that women , such as the girl who attains adult status, the divorcee, who are not under the sexual jurisdiction of a man have prerogatives and freedom.

Wenger too points out however the privileges and respect the system gives to women, the way the Torah protects the woman by such means as Ketubbah, and by the Halachic demands made upon the husband to provide for his wife's sexual needs, her food and clothing, her standard of living at least as high as it was previously.

Wegner says that women in the Mishnah have mixed status often, combining elements of being chattel and of being independent respected persons.

Knowing the complexities associated with studying Jewish Law, especially those laws based on gender, this book is an asset to you library.
Wegner explains these laws, offers a variety of Rabbinic commentaries throughout the centuries as well as modern day feminist interpretations and arguments. Her easy to follow commentary makes understanding the history of the Mishnah and purpose of these laws a comprehendable process for the professor as well as the students of the Mishnah. I would highly recommend adding this book to your library, preferably in hardback, seeing how you will refer to it time and time again.

Interesting and Useful

A better title might be, "A Feminist Look at the Treatment of Women in the Mishnah".

The author makes no attempt to hide the fact that she is a feminist and some of her conclusions reflect her feminist philosophy rather than the facts presented. The author also gives clear indication that she does not consider Scripture as devine revelation but apparently the work of men. If the reader keeps these things in mind he should find that the book IS very interesting and may be helpful in seeing how the rules of the Mishnah relate to women.

The author provides many of her own interpretations of Scripture and the Mishnah, some of which I find in no other place and stand in sharp contrast to other commentaries I've read. One significant passage where the author appears to add her own twist is Numbers 30:2-17. She regularly adds conditions associated with sexual relations that are not found in the text and must be presumed, at best. The JPS Torah Commentary: Numbers (English and Hebrew Edition)

The book appears to be well researched and well organized. The author presents the rulings regarding women in a very systematic and logical organization. She covers many combinations, special conditions and circumstances of women and how the sages addressed them. It can get a bit confusing when she presents the contradictory rulings of different rabbinical schools but that is the nature of the issue.

I do recommend the book for some good insight into how Jewish society see and deal with women.

As a matter of full disclosure: I am a conservative Christian. I research Jewish thought because of our common heritage, but I must admit that I know too little of Hebrew and Jewish thought - thus this reading. I have some serious disagreement with many of the author's conclusions.

Should the author ever revise the book, and I hope she does, I would like to suggest a couple things:
- The end notes are excellent and I believe should be read. I would, however, have preferred them to be footnotes rather than endnotes. The constant flipping to the back is a bit of a distraction. The notes would fit well in the text as footnotes.
- I would like a chapter or appendix that looks at the examples in the historical narrative of Scripture and compares the historical event with the rules in the Mishnah.
- Although this book was written to specifically addresses the Mishnah, there are Scriptural passages that apply to women that are never referenced. I'd like to see better coverage of the Scriptural passages since it is clear the Mishnah is based upon Scripture.
- I'd like to see a Scriptural index.
- The author does an excellent job of defining terms in the text as she introduces and uses them, however, a glossary would be a welcome addition.

The narrative is free flowing, humorous, informative, and readable. Weir's research abilities and deductive reasoning have shed a whole new light on the political maneuverings of the era and thus on the myriad forces that drove Henry VIII, his wives, and his children. Personal and obscure facts about the women, Henry's relationship with his nobles, and quirks of the times enliven the text. Genealogical tables for all the families involved are included. This book can be used for research, as it contains a wealth of information. However, students who don't read the whole book (even though its size may intimidate them) are missing a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the Tudor era laid open for them.

Weir (the genealogical Britain's Royal Family--not reviewed) here uses the many public records and personal letters of the early 1500's to offer a comprehensive, factual version of the tempestuous private and public lives of Henry VIII and his six wives. The story is dominated by Henry and the devolution of his character from an ``affable,'' ``gentle,'' and gifted (he wrote poetry) lover, soldier, and ruler into a porcine, paranoid, impotent old man who was exploited and manipulated by courtiers and women, some of whom he imprisoned, beheaded, or hanged. Henry's brother's widow, Catherine of Aragon, six years the king's senior, became at 24 his first wife. Thirty years later, she was set aside for the ambitious ``virago'' Anne Boleyn, who was in turn beheaded to make room for the gentle Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth and was replaced by the repugnant and scholarly Anne of Cleves. Soon, Anne was retired for Catherine Howard, a 15-year-old ``empty- headed wanton'' who, despite Henry's passion for her, was executed- -along with three alleged but innocent lovers--and replaced by the king's most ``agreeable wife,'' Catherine Parr, who narrowly escaped execution herself for religious quarreling. Vowing in marriage to be ``bonair and buxom/amiable/in bed and at board'' and to produce heirs, Henry's wives illustrate to Weir, through their pregnancies, miscarriages, and infants' deaths, both the profligacy of nature and the dependence of political power on sexual prowess. One of My Favorites Each Time I Read I Read It!

I love this book! It is the first book I read authored by Alison Weir and it remains my favorite. When I first held the book in my hands my first thought was, "This is a pretty big book about 6 wives of one king. I really hope this is going to be interesting and not a dull recount of facts and dates". When I finished the book I knew that anyone with even a passing curiosity about history would have found this to be an amazing book to read. Yes, there were facts and dates galore but presented within a story that was absorbing, engrossing, and entertaining as well. I found that while reading the book it was most helpful to me to have my laptop next to me so that I could pull up images of the locations being discussed in the book. This added an additional level of enjoyment because this enabled me to see exactly what the author was describing in the book. I could see the actual paintings that were brought up in the book as well as portraits of the people. Not only was I sad to see the book come to the end but I was launched into a search to read the books that were used for reference and research purposes. I have read this book several times by now and when I saw the book come up on a Amazon Deal e-mail, purchasing it for my Kindle has now enabled me to literally have the book at my fingertips to read wherever I am.

Weir or Fraser?

What’s Great: the writing, which makes this book a delight to read. Weir paints each wife with color and depth so that we come to know them across the centuries: the “staunch but misguided woman of principle,” the “ambitious adventuress with a streak of vengeance,” the “strong-minded matriarch,” the “good-humored woman,” the “empty-headed wanton,” and the “godly matron” with a weakness for “handsome rogues.”

Why I don’t give this book 5 stars: because I don’t know how much of the information I can trust. Weir is a novelist who embellishes her narrative with colorful flourishes that make for excellent reading, but which may also distort the actual events and influence our perceptions. Saying that Henry stomped off in a huff is certainly more lively than saying he left the room, but unless his emotional state is corroborated by witnesses, Weir’s depiction is artistic license rather than documented fact. It’s also sometimes hard to tell when Weir is presenting her own conclusions and when she is relaying what she’s found in source material. When she writes that Henry wanted Elizabeth “kept out of his sight” after Anne Boleyn’s execution, is this her interpretation or what a contemporary actually observed? What also makes me question Weir’s interpretations is that I don’t always find her explanations convincing. For example, she postulates that Jane Seymour’s delay in conceiving was probably due to Henry and his “advancing infirmity,” as evidenced by the fact that his later wives bore no children. We can never really know why it took Jane several months to conceive. She could have had irregular menstrual cycles. Henry’s physical condition in 1536 was very different from his state in the 1540s, and any impotence there may have been during his later years would not necessarily have afflicted him earlier. The reasoning just seems flimsy to me. Lastly, some of Weir’s information is not corroborated by professional historians, making me question her analysis and assessment of sources.

Still, I can’t deny that I enjoyed reading this book, and found it accurate enough (that is, the information matched what I’ve found in other books) to recommend. For reading pleasure, I put it ahead of Antonia Fraser’s book of the same title, but Fraser’s is the one I believe. She seems less prone to presenting her opinions as facts and offers more plausible explanations for her views than Weir.

Alison Weir is awesome

I never get tired of reading any of Ms. Weir's books. This one is just as great, with many details of his life that I didn't know about. Great read, great drama, lots of drama in fact when it comes to this dude. No wonder he is still fascinating hundreds of years later. What I find intriguing about that whole time period is that the more things change the more they stay the same. The same drive for power, money, influence, sex, religion and fame back then is alive and well today. I can only giggle at the thought of Henry on Twitter. "Anne is the best", "Anne betrayed me". "The Pope sucks", "I am the best there ever was", "I love a good wedding, don't you?"

Good introduction

Here is an excellent introduction to cluster analysis. The concepts are explained in clear language, with many illustrative examples. It is possibly the best of the introductory level books. I give it 4 stars because of a few misprints, and a few places where some essential information or detail has been omitted that can lead to misunderstanding.

Cluster Analysis at the Edge

I read this book as the text in a four-week online class on cluster analysis. I learned a great deal and do not regret purchasing this book. It has several strengths and some weaknesses as an introduction to this statistical technique.

There is a good introduction to the unsupervised learning problem of classifying objects into meaningful groups with no basis for validating these classifications. The authors' decision to focus on graphical methods early in the text is a good one and lays an intuitive foundation for their more technical presentation later in the book. The discussion of similarity measures at the core of cluster analysis is a good overview and prepares readers for more advanced discussions elsewhere.

The book closes with the highly useful and practical chapter "Some final comments and guidelines." It lists and describes nine steps in a typical cluster analysis and refers readers back to sections of the book which inform the decisions at each step. It's coverage of methods for testing cluster quality and the likelihood of no structure in a dataset is also accessible and of practical value. Readers might consider looking through this material before reading the previous chapters to help organize the information more meaningfully.

The middle chapters are worth reading, but suffer from a few problems. In general, these chapters are better at describing the boundaries of current research in clustering techniques than they are in describing typical applications. There are too many research results and not enough examples. The examples that are included are described too briefly, making it difficult to follow how the analysis was carried out. Better integration of citations in the body of the text would be a key improvement. As would inclusion of sample exercises with worked-out solutions in an appendix.

Recognizing the difficulty of making a statistics text accessible to readers using a variety of software packages, I still believe this was not done well in this book. See Iain Pardoe's Applied Regression Modeling for one example of how to do this very well. I will hope for improvements in a later edition of this book.

This book has challenges as a text, but was worth the price and the time spent with it. Still, I will be on the lookout for a better alternative.

Old might still be gold

I own acopy of the second edition of presumably the same book published in 1980. But its author is Brian Everitt alone and it has 132 pages. Obviously, the current edition discusses the more recent developments in Clustering Analysis and it has two more co-authors. So I might miss on newer definitions, but I have to say that the author's explanation of the then available methods in the old edition is of excellent quality.

Works best as a violent sort of narrative biography

Considering we're talking about one of the most sadistic tyrants of the early 15th century, I really expected to enjoy Pyramid of Skulls: A Novel of Timur, Warrior and Emperor more than I did. It's not that it's a bad novel, I just found it hard to get involved in the story. I couldn't quite bring myself to give up on it, but it was a bit of a struggle to keep going back to it.

Martin Fruchtman has clearly done his research, and he does a superb job of conveying not just the horrors of war, but the practicalities of torture and intimidation. He paints an interesting picture of the political and religious landscape,and really develops the elements of the various cultures that come together. Timur is a difficult man to build a story around, since he's completely abhorrent and unlikable, but there is no denying he is a brilliant leader. He's not a man you enjoy reading about, and certainly not a hero to tie your hopes, but he is fascinating on an intellectual level.

It's David, Timur's Jewish doctor, who makes the story accessible, his presence an interesting narrative trick on behalf of Fruchtman, and one that allows for some thought-provoking observations on just how little we, as a society, have changed over the years. He drives the story forward, connects the various plot threads, and 'speaks' for the reader in many ways. While the book didn't entirely work for me as a novel (in terms of protagonists and villains, story arc, etc.), it certainly did work as a sort of narrative biography, which I do enjoy, but not with the all-consuming, complete immersion of an epic novel.

It's an easy story to become overwhelmed by, especially with the gratuitous gore and relentless carnage, but worth sticking with if you're at all interested in the history of warfare, conquest, empire building, and religious fanaticism. Well-written and well-researched, it's definitely worth a read for the right audience.

Enjoyable and Relevant Historical Fiction

This is a historical novel that centers around Timur (or Tamerlane) the Conqueror, grandson of Genghiz Khan and a critical leader of the Mongols, who had a great impact on Eurasia in the 14th and early 15th Century. Before reading this book, I knew about Timur that (1) he was one of history's greatest killers; (2) that he turned Samarkand into what must have been an amazing metropolis. Martin Fruchtman has built his image of Timur from historical records of that era, and manages to plumb the various currents of Islam at the time and their relationships to Jews and Christians and even European merchant culture of the time, while telling a good story primarily through the eyes of Timur's Jewish court physician and later viceroy. At times, the novel follows a European serial killer who is adept at dismembering prostitutes, cultural and geopolitical and political issues in Timur's court, a military campaign against Syria and the Assassins, and the philosophical and social develpments of Islam at that era, which the author considers a foreshadowing of modern currents of religious extremism and anti-tolerance in that religion. There are details of the state of medicine and military arts in China, the Mongols, and Europeans and some insightful social history -- especially with respect to the relationships between men and women of the era. Fruchtman sets up a good plot and moves his characters methodically through it, although I found some of the really interesting parts (to me) such as the quest for the serial killer were eclipsed by the plot-line dealing with the machinations amoung the competing courtiers of Timur.

There is a lot of sadistic killing and sadistic rapine in this book, which I believe to be reasonably related to both the plot and the history of that era and culture. (This is not a criticism, but this is NOT a book for the squeamish.) In some ways, I was reminded about some of the more graphic (not in the sense of comic books) novels related to the Nazis on the Eastern Front of WWII (i. e., "Cross of Iron"), and the sadism and brutality and outright evil was taxing reading at times. The complex plot and subplots are generally competently handled, as is the basic narrative of the characters and dialog, but I wish there had been deeper probing of the "hypothetical" character of Timur. Fruchtman does a fine job when he is using "historical sources" as a takeoff point for his characterization, but his characters lose immediacy as people once off that familiar footing.

When I evaluate historical fiction, I use these categories and give this novel the following grades:
(1) Historical accuracy -- A -- I did not find any anachronisms in the descriptions or the characters, and was surprised to learn of some existing technologies at that time.
(2) Relevance -- A -- I learned some things from the encapsulated history that offer some context of things going on in current events.
(3) Plot -- C+ -- the author covers a lot of ground, and sometimes leaves off of tracks I would have enjoyed following more closely.
(4) Characterization -- B -- The primary characters were of great interest, and the supporting characters not so much.
(5) Believability -- B -- most of the scenes, especially military ones, are quite plausible, but some of the interaction within Timur's court was a bit flat.

In short, this was a pretty good novel about interesting characters in a fascinating time and place I knew little about.

RECOMMENDED -- subject to caution for violence.

A fascinating look at 13th century Eurasia

This historical fiction is well researched and centers around a region and period not usually found in historical fiction, that of Timur, a brutal 14th century Eurasian conqueror. It isn't for the faint of heart. Timur wasn't politically correct, diplomatic or gentle in his conquests, nor is the culture favorable to women, Jews or Christians. It is a fascinating look into the period, the merchant culture and Timur's military machine.

There's a lot going on in this story and at times it's difficult to follow and keep track of the cast of characters. The primary characters are well developed, particularly David, Timur's physician, vizier and eventual viceroy, but I didn't feel connected to any of them. I felt the historical period was the centerpiece, more than the characters who populated it. And that's okay - the author made it a fascinating centerpiece, particularly in light of the scarcity of any other similar fiction or nonfiction.

I'm giving this book a grade of 3/5 because I felt it fell short on character development, and at times poorly constructed sentences made it difficult to follow.

If you're interested in 13th century Eurasia, the Muslim world of that period, the conquests of Timur and the possibility that this might have some relationship to current events, and you don't mind graphic brutality and violence, this is a book I can recommend.
