Cultural Strategy: Using Innovative Ideologies to Build Breakthrough Brands, by Douglas Holt, Douglas Cameron

How do we explain the breakthrough market success of businesses like Nike, Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, and Jack Daniel's? Conventional models of strategy and innovation simply don't work. The most influential ideas on innovation are shaped by the worldview of engineers and economists - build a better mousetrap and the world will take notice. Holt and Cameron challenge this conventional wisdom and take an entirely different approach: champion a better ideology and the world will take notice as well. Holt and Cameron build a powerful new theory of cultural innovation. Brands in mature categories get locked into a form of cultural mimicry, what the authors call a cultural orthodoxy. Historical changes in society create demand for new culture - ideological opportunities that upend this orthodoxy. Cultural innovations repurpose cultural content lurking in subcultures to respond to this emerging demand, leapfrogging entrenched incumbents.

Cultural Strategy guides managers and entrepreneurs on how to leverage ideological opportunities:

- How managers can use culture to out-innovate their competitors
- How entrepreneurs can identify new market opportunities that big companies miss
- How underfunded challengers can win against category Goliaths
- How technology businesses can avoid commoditization
- How social entrepreneurs can develop businesses that appeal to more than just fellow activists
- How subcultural brands can break out of the 'cultural chasm' to mass market success
- How global brands can pursue cross-cultural strategies to succeed in local markets
- How organizations can maximize their innovation capabilities by avoiding the brand bureaucracy trap

Written by leading authorities on branding in the world today, along with one of the advertising industry's leading visionaries, Cultural Strategy transforms what has always been treated as the "intuitive" side of market innovation into a systematic strategic discipline.

"May well be one of the most important books on advertising and branding in the past ten years."--Richard Huntington, Adliterate.com

About the Author

Douglas Holt was Professor of Marketing at both the Harvard Business School and the University of Oxford. He is now President of the Cultural Strategy Group, a consulting firm that provides brand strategy and innovation solutions using the cultural strategy framework. He is a leading expert on brand strategy, having established cultural branding as an important new strategy tool in his best-selling book How Brands Become Icons: The Principles of Cultural Branding. He has developed cultural strategies for a wide range of brands, including
Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Ben & Jerry's, Sprite, Jack Daniel's, MINI, MasterCard, Fat Tire beer, Qdoba, Georgia Coffee, Planet Green, and Mike's Hard Lemonade, along with a number of non-profit organizations. He holds degrees from Stanford, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern, and is the editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. He has been invited to give talks at universities and management seminars worldwide, including the Global Economic Forum in Davos

Douglas Cameron is Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer for Amalgamated, an influential non-traditional advertising agency known for developing content across multiple media platforms. He has developed brand strategies and campaign ideas for a wide range of clients, including Ben & Jerry's, Clearblue, Coca-Cola, Fat Tire beer, FOX Sports, Freelancers Union, Fuse Music Television, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Sprite, and Svedka vodka. He began his career at Cliff Freeman & Partners, the most lauded creative shop of its time. He entered the world of marketing inadvertently: travelling the world as a bagpiper, he was invited by David Ogilvy to perform at his French castle. Ogilvy insisted he take up advertising. He graduated from Dartmouth College, where he received the English department's top graduating honour.

Refreshingly Irreverant
By C. Sullivan
Liked this book very much. The irreverence and polemic were refreshing. Holt and Cameron practice what they preach, and don't pull punches. The ideas and thinking are solid. The cases are excellent. After reading I recommended to friends at ad agencies, many of whom no doubt face H & C's `brand bureaucracy'.

Style-wise, `Cultural Strategy' found a nice niche between scholarship and practice. I liked this approach. But if you prefer 1-2-3 books on brand and strategy, don't buy the book. You're going to get Max Weber and terms like `mimetic isomorphism' just as much you get stories on brands like Nike, Levi's, Vitamin Water and Fat Tire. I liked the combination, others might not.

As someone in strategy, I do have some beef with Holt and Cameron's stance against utility, or what they refer to as `mousetrap' thinking. They take the constructivist line of thinking too far, and it diminishes their argument. They need a foil, but of all their polemics this one feels more rhetorical than substantive. Ideally, value creation and cultural innovation work together. If subjectivity were all that mattered we wouldn't be in this recession. H & C have written particular kinds of cases-- products fighting it out in mature markets with homogeneous offerings. In these situations i think they're argument holds up better. In emerging markets where the there is still a great deal of diversity in offerings, i'm not as sure. The one outlier here is the freelancer's union case, which was quite good.

But on all other accounts, this book furthered my thinking. Even if you don't agree with the authors, they'll engage you. I'd read it.

An Important But Incomplete Beginning To Developing Full Cultural Strategy
By Jonathan Cook
Cultural Strategy, by Douglas Cameron and Douglas Holt, was a simultaneously exciting and frustrating read for me. It is an important book in that it provides a specific model for integrating the power of culture into marketing strategy. It's a milestone that the authors go beyond the generic advice to simply "pay attention to culture" that most business books provide. The authors clearly have working experience in this area, and are able to provide compelling narratives to justify the application of their cultural strategy model.

The weakness of this book, however, is a consequence of it being one of the first of its kind. The model of cultural strategy that it offers is better than what most marketers currently use, but it's much thinner than it could be.

For one thing, the authors' model of culture is rather sparse, in comparison to what most cultural anthropologists might describe. Holt and Cameron content themselves with understanding culture as mere ideology - as ideas that are shared and motivate. Culture is much more than that. It's especially important for people in business to work with culture as something embodied. Culture isn't just the communication of ideas. Culture is in physical objects we possess, and the behavior we engage in with those objects. These aspects of cultural strategy are largely missing from Holt and Cameron's model. The authors briefly mention ritual here and there, but they never explain what they mean by it, much less how to use ritual in business. This oversight leads to a rather narrow scope of recommende application. Holt and Cameron focus mostly on advertising as a tool of cultural strategy, but advertising holds a rapidly diminishing portion of the marketer's toolbox.

The book is thick with examples, perhaps a bit over thick, to compensate for the relatively sparse principles for cultural strategy that the authors provide. People who have read other work by Douglas Holt will recognize much that has been recycled for use here. The heavy reliance on examples gives the impression that cultural strategy mostly involves having a team of savvy and perceptive people who will notice cultural trends before the competition. Indeed, at the end of the book, the authors make an unfortunate descent into design thinking, suggesting that "cultural studios" can simply start off sloppy, and then go through iterative cycles of testing and refinement until they hit on a strategy that takes advantage of a cultural disruption.

Some broader principles of culture could improve this fumbling approach, but Holt and Cameron are resistant to such principles, viewing them as tools that stiff "brand bureaucracies" use to defend their falwed ideologies. There's some truth to that, but a smarter strategy could involve using principles of culture to establish more sustainable, less ideosyncratic processes of anti-bureaucratic innovation.

A final shortcoming of this book is that the authors don't seriously treat other methodologies that could be incorporated into a bigger, more effective system of cultural strategy in business. Holt and Cameron acknowledge only the most superficial versions of emotional mindshare strategy, for example, when there are in fact a growing number of research firms using extremely deep qualitative methodologies to illuminate complex and beautiful systems of emotional significance. When the authors of this book reduce such research to catchphrases, they accurately describe what corporate bureaucracies can do TO the results of such research, but the solution to this probem is to improve translation of research results into corporate action, not to abandon the research entirely.

I've focused on the gaps and flaws in Cultural Strategy in this review, but encourage people working to develop culturally-informed methods in business to read this book nonetheless. It is to be expected that any book seeking to introduce concepts of culture into business will be partial and problematic at this point. The serious treatment of culture as a source for management and marketing has barely begun, and Holt and Cameron are to be applauded for this effort to provide the qualitative side of commerce more of the attention that it deserves.

Essential reading for academics, entrepreneurs, and F500 managers
By William Ko
This outstanding work underscores the importance of incorporating culture into marketing initiatives to drive sales growth and market share. Citing Weber's theory of bureaucratization in Economics and Society, Holt argues convincingly that leading firms have sacrificed marketing innovation for ineffective brand management based on standardization, superfluous scientific methodology, and dehumanization of the consumer products/services and the markets that they ultimately serve. Controversially, but supported with strong empircal examples, Holt asserts that the epistemic proclivities of establishing marketing as a 'faux science' has resulted in stagnant 'mousetrap' strategies that result in minimal gains in growth.

Supported by case-studies of both successful and unsuccessful marketing initiatives, Cultural Strategy is essential reading for academics, entrepreneurs and F500 management seeking iconoclastic reconceptualizations of the consumer goods landscape.

I suspect, however, that the prevailing path dependencies and perceptions of 'brand strategy' among leading firms in industry today will inhibit Holt's central thesis from attaining wide-scale practice. But perhaps as a greater number of agile entrepreneurs leverage 'cultural strategy' to win a greater share of blue ocean opportunities, the aforementioned market-leading firms will be compelled to take notice.

Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power, by Steve Coll

An “extraordinary” and “monumental” expos of Big Oil from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner SteveColl (The Washington Post)

Includes a profile of current chairman and chief executive of ExxonMobil Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trump's nomination for Secretary of State

In this, the first hard-hitting examination of ExxonMobil—the largest and most powerful private corporation in the United States—Steve Coll reveals the true extent of its power. Private Empire pulls back the curtain, tracking the corporation’s recent history and its central role on the world stage, beginning with the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 and leading to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The action spans the globe—featuring kidnapping cases, civil wars, and high-stakes struggles at the Kremlin—and the narrative is driven by larger-than-life characters, including corporate legend Lee “Iron Ass” Raymond, ExxonMobil’s chief executive until 2005, and current chairman and chief executive Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trump's nomination for Secretary of State. A penetrating, news-breaking study, Private Empire is a defining portrait of Big Oil in American politics and foreign policy.

From Bookforum
Coll employs language that’s plain, clear, and free of accusation. Though some of the details recounted across the sprawling narrative of Private Empire are outrageous, the reporting is deep and fair. — Coral Davenport

Review
“ExxonMobil has met its match in Coll, an elegant writer and dogged reporter… extraordinary… monumental.”—THE WASHINGTON POST

“Fascinating… Private Empire is a book meticulously prepared as if for trial, a lawyerly accumulation of information that lets the facts speak for themselves… a compelling and elucidatory work.”—BLOOMBERG

“Private Empire is meticulous, multi-angled and valuable… Mr. Coll’s prose sweeps the earth like an Imax camera.”—Dwight Garner, THE NEW YORK TIMES

"ExxonMobil has cut a ruthless path through the Age of Oil. Yet intense secrecy has kept one of the world's largest companies a mystery, until now. Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power is a masterful study of Big Oil's biggest player… Coll's in-depth reporting, buttressed by his anecdotal prose, make Private Empire a must-read. Consider Private Empire a sequel of sorts to The Prize, Daniel Yergin's Pulitzer-winning history of the oil industry… Coll's portrait of ExxonMobil is both riveting and appalling… Yet Private Empire is not so much an indictment as a fascinating look into American business and politics. With each chapter as forceful as a New Yorker article, the book abounds in Dickensian characters.”—SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"Coll makes clear in his magisterial account that Exxon is mighty almost beyond imagining, producing more profit than any American company in the history of profit, the ultimate corporation in 'an era of corporate ascendancy.' This history of its last two decades is therefore a revealing history of our time, a chronicle of the intersection between energy and politics."—Bill McKibben, NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS

"Groundbreaking... Masterful as a corporate portrait, Private Empire gushes with narrative."—AMERICAN PROSPECT

More Timely Than Ever
By michael d. mosettig
As the boss of ExxonMobil gets ready to take over the State Department, this riveting history is more than timely. Big oil, companies always have had their own foreign policies. How will Tillerson's corporate foreign policy morph into Trump's foreign policy? Steve Coll's book gives us the best road map possible.

Must read for anyone interested in the fascinating world of oil
By Gerrit Middelkoop
Private Empire provides a very interesting view behind the scene of the world's biggest oil company across the decades. It shows the good, the bad and the ugly of the firm and it's leaders against the backdrop of historical events in the (oil) world. Exxon provided and provides great wealth for shareholders, employees and host countries, but also was and partly is silent where host countries commit atrocities, don't respect human rights or misuse the wealth Exxon helps them to extract from oil. The understandable reasoning is that this is not the job of a company. Still, this leads to some bitter outcomes. The book provides for fascinating reading. The only thing missing is a deeper understanding of the motivations of the key players, the CEO's of Exxon. They come off as rather one-dimensional, which may well be true and certainly results from describing the actions of the players through the eyes of an independent observer, but some colour provided by the CEO's would have made the book even more interesting. Still, this is a great book.

When you are *really* big, who matters to you?
By David Forel
The book is principally about the international doings of ExxonMobil (EM) during the leadership of the current and past CEOs, Lee R. Raymond (CEO of EM from 1998 to 2005) and Rex W. Tillerson (CEO of EM since Dr. Raymond retired at the end of 2005).

The story starts with the Exxon Valdez grounding in Alaska in March 1989 and ends with the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Starting with the Exxon Valdez is the author's way of introducing employee Lee Raymond. At that time, as President of Exxon (before the merger with Mobil in 1999), Mr Raymond was the lead for addressing the Exxon Valdez problem.

The book ends by discussing the Deepwater Horizon accident because the book has to end and that's a dramatic event, even though EM was no part of the accident.

The book is relentless in reporting how this international company works anywhere it can reasonably make a profit. Another bold point is how EM avoids engagement with the US government whenever it can avoid it, but also courts US diplomatic intervention when EM needs a way smoothed with a foreign power.

Along the way, we are taught that, to be a viable business, to keep the stock value up, an oil/gas company has to constantly look for new places to get oil/gas. This can be done by exploration and drilling, and it can be done by buying a company. We learn to sympathize with the company's quest for oil/gas because there are thousands of employees and retirees who count on EM's success.

This is a good read, a view into the highest level of what a very large company does to survive and flourish.

My take-away thought: Perhaps the most famous quote in the book is from Dr. Raymond: “I’m not a U.S. company, and I don’t make decisions based on what’s good for the U.S." I have always thought of EM as an American company, but Dr. Raymond set me straight. Now I wonder how "American" our other largest companies are (examples: Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson).

Not For Me
By Tracy
~* 1.5 Stars *~
He is a refugee, a Zetithian without a planet and one of the last of his kind since his world was blown out of the galaxy by a jealous, sadistic husband. He is revered as a sexual dynamo. It's both his job, and, as he and his brethren are tasked with saving his kind from extinction by reproducing in quantity, his calling. And he's gotten very, very rich from it. Women from all over the universe pay just about anything for a few hours in his bed, for a chance to bear his children. He has five hundred of them, now, but his duty is not yet finished.

That's why he's on Terran. Human women are known for being intensely attracted to his kind. He already had several appointments to further spread his seed. And then, intending nothing more salacious than a simple meal, Tarq Zulveidinoe enters the restaurant where Lucinda Force works as a waitress for her demanding father, and life will never be the same for him again.

She smells so good. It's unlike anything he's ever scented before, and he wants her madly. She may even be his mate. Her scent has him ready to pound nails and his fangs are ready to nip at her skin. But he is not worthy of her. Of that he has no doubt. And even though she wants him to sire her children, she doesn't want to keep him.

If only he had the time to try to convince her.

Lucy can't even look at Tarq without wanting him. Who could? He's gorgeous, built, and charming. His reputation as a galaxy-hopping love machine is legendary. He doesn't even charge women to sleep with him anymore, he's so rich. He just wants to reproduce, to increase the numbers of his race.

Fortunately, that works out nicely for Lucy. At almost thirty, she's desperate for children, but her father keeps her mired in indentured servitude and won't even let her date, let alone marry and have children. She's still a virgin, for pity's sake. But when the deliciously appealing Tarq asks her to call him, to be with him, she decides to grab for her future with both hands.

She'll have Tarq impregnate her, then she'll flee her imposing father, find her happiness, and start her life for real as she raises her children. And if she'll never forget the Zetithian who made her heart happy, well, it's not like he hasn't a string of lovers in the galaxy. She knows he'd never want her for life. She's too plain, too provincial, too...Lucy...to ever hold onto the man she so quickly and irrevocably fell in love with.

There are some books that just aren't good fits for me, and this one is one of them. I didn't have a problem with it being the eighth book in an existing series. It read fine as a stand-alone. Unfortunately, little else in the book appealed, despite me sort of liking the Zetithian backstory and enjoying the external plot threads in the second half of the book.

The biggest problem I had with the story was the relationship conflict between Tarq and Lucy. Not only was it something that could have been easily resolved with just a smidgen of honest communication between them, but it was belabored throughout the entire book. Mentioned so often, in fact, that it lent the narrative an overall feeling of repetition and made it hard not to toss my Kindle against the wall.

He loves her, but he thinks he's stupid because he can't read and he's bedded more women than an NBA basketball team (to the nth power). She's all things good and kind and would never want to be his mate. She loves him, but she's plain and ordinary, and could never hold the attention of someone as worldly and experienced as he. He would never want to stay with her. These insecurities are brought up again and again, ad nauseam. And despite the loving actions of both towards each other, neither finds the stones to even broach the subject with the other. This is not my idea of scintillating romantic conflict.

It wasn't until the second half of the book that some external conflict elements were introduced and the plot expanded beyond the romance. Some of those elements were quite nice, but I would have appreciated a bit more depth and detail. It served, though, to lessen the constant mentions of Tarq's and Lucy's insecurities, even if it didn't extinguish them completely. I wish it had.

There were other issues I had with the book, but those were comparatively minor when held up against the relationship problems. Still, the dialogue and the character definition were lacking in sophistication. I kept feeling like I was reading about a couple of horny teenagers with the way some of the characters thoughts and actions were represented. The sex was in no way adolescent, though. It was frequent and descriptive. It was also a bit odd for me, in part because of a Zetithian's physiological differences from a human. In part because of some of the descriptive passages.

QUOTE:
"Thick and long, it curved toward her like a snake about to strike, the scalloped head aimed right at her, orgasmic syrup dripping like venom from the points."

Wow. Yeah. That's...well...more scary than sexy to me, no matter how nice Tarq's snard (yes, that's the Zetithian word for his ejaculate) tastes (like a hot fudge sundae, apparently). And that wasn't the only disturbing thing about his body or his talents. Practically prehensile manly bits are nice in theory, but kind of disturbing in context.

After eight books, I have to assume that Brooks has a wide following, that there are many fans of this series. I wish her nothing but the best for the continued success. After Stud, however, I can't say I'll be along for the ride. This one just wasn't my cup of tea.

Disclosure: An ARC of this book was provided to me by Sourcebooks Casablanca publisher Sourcebooks via NetGalley. This rating, review, and all included thoughts and comments are my own.

Getting Better with each new book
By Sheiglagh
The 8th book in the series, Cheryl Brooks continues to titillate readers' imagination with her wonderful Zithitians. Forget Captain Kirk and the Orion Slave girls. The Zithitian men rule the galaxy with their sexual prowess.

Born with a reading disability, Tarq believes the he was only good for one thing - being a stud and having as many children as he can with as many willing women. After all, the Zithitian race is almost extinct.

He would have continued on being a stud for hire until he met Lucy. Taken for granted by her family and bullied all her life, Lucy has her own self-worth issues. But a dalliance with Tarq proved to be a turning point in her life. But before these two lovers can find their happily ever after, they have to face obstacles - real and imagined.

In STUD, Cheryl Brooks returns her readers to a romantic story. Fans of Cat Star Chronicles have been brought to the far reaches of the galaxy. In VIRGIN, the 7th book, Ms Brooks even dealt with interplanetary politics.

But STUD is more personal, as we see the hero Tarq struggle with his disability. We also see how verbal abuse made Lucy very insecure. Yet against all odds, these two found to courage to leave their comfort zone so that they can live without being afraid.

Ms Brooks is still on a philosophical bent in STUD, and by doing so, she gave the Zithitian world another dimension.

This book is rated M for Mature due to sex.

How the Revolutionary War Began

The American colonists were fed up with British law. They refused to buy English goods. They formed a militia of tradesmen and farmers ready to fight at a moment’s notice. Most importantly, they joined together. All 13 colonies sent representatives to decide whether they should form a new country. That group wrote the Declaration of Independence, the document that summed up a revolution.

This book is full of valuable illlustrations and iformation. It is a bit weighty to read with kids all at once, but reading 2-4 pages a day it's a great guide to the events leading up to the Revolutionary war and American independence

Excellent for kids!

My 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son LOVE this book. Each double-page spread covers one aspect of the American Revolution, breaking it into small, easy-to-understand chunks for them. The illustrations are well done and help tell the story. We read 3 or 4 pages each night because they keep begging for more. After just a few nights of reading it at bedtime, they can both explain the Stamp Act, the Quartering Act, the French and Indian War, the Boston Tea Party, taxation without representation, as well as identifying some key people in the revolution. I am so amazed. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to teach history to their children, and I am hoping to find more like it!

The Racial Contract, by Charles W. Mills

The Racial Contract puts classic Western social contract theory, deadpan, to extraordinary radical use. With a sweeping look at the European expansionism and racism of the last five hundred years, Charles W. Mills demonstrates how this peculiar and unacknowledged "contract" has shaped a system of global European domination: how it brings into existence "whites" and "non-whites," full persons and sub-persons, how it influences white moral theory and moral psychology; and how this system is imposed on non-whites through ideological conditioning and violence. The Racial Contract argues that the society we live in is a continuing white supremacist state.

Holding up a mirror to mainstream philosophy, this provocative book explains the evolving outline of the racial contract from the time of the New World conquest and subsequent colonialism to the written slavery contract, to the "separate but equal" system of segregation in the twentieth-century United States. According to Mills, the contract has provided the theoretical architecture justifying an entire history of European atrocity against non-whites, from David Hume's and Immanuel Kant's claims that blacks had inferior cognitive power, to the Holocaust, to the kind of imperialism in Asia that was demonstrated by the Vietnam War.

Mills suggests that the ghettoization of philosophical work on race is no accident. This work challenges the assumption that mainstream theory is itself raceless. Just as feminist theory has revealed orthodox political philosophy's invisible white male bias, Mills's explication of the racial contract exposes its racial underpinnings.

Review

"Mills uses the idea of the social contract to argue that racially structured discrimination is a norm, rather than a deviation from the ideal. . . . Framed by a lucid discussion of the modern global exploitation of nonwhites is Mills's appeal to standpoint epistemology to maintain that the racial contract is a naturalized version of social contract theory."―Choice

"An ambitious book. . . . Mill's racial contract thesis is so convincing that one wonders why it hasn't been explored until now in the precincts of mainstream political philosophy. But that's his point. The racial contract's effectiveness lies in its very invisibility."―In These Times

"This compelling and even explosive book argues that white racism is itself a political system with its own levels of rights, duties, benefits, burdens, etc. . . . Sure to provoke a heated debate far beyond the field of political philosophy, this bold and wide-ranging study makes a clear and convincing case for the view that systematic racial oppression was not an anomaly sullying otherwise universalistic assumptions about individual rights, but the context in which theorizing about such rights occurred."―The Front Table

"An important work of philosophy that is at the same time short and accessible. . . . Mills succeeds admirably in arguing his case for the existence of a racial contract. That he can do this in a way that is rigorous, passionate, and accessible is an important achievement."―Philosophy in Review

"The Racial Contract is an excellent book. . . . It is a testament to Mills's expertise as a philosopher, a scholar, and a downright intelligent writer that he has managed to pull off so comprehensive, informative, and persuasive a work in an elegant 133 pages (excluding notes). . . . He achieves this explanation through some of the clearest prose I have encountered in recent philosophical literature."―Lewis Gordon, Small Axe: A Journal of Criticism

"A very important book. . . . The Racial Contract has the potential to radically challenge many of us to reevaluate how we think about social contract theory. As well, to take the arguments that Mills makes is to be prepared to rethink about the concept of race and the structure of our political systems. This is a very important book indeed, and should be a welcome addition to the ongoing discussions surrounding social contract theory."―Teaching Philosophy

"This is a significant and compelling work. . . . Mills turns our attention to the racial domination and exploitation that have been equally pervasive features of the history of liberalism. . . . A major contribution."―Ethics

"Offers a bold conceptualization of the racial order and a critique of the way it has been (mis)represented within the domain of scholarship. . . . Mills cuts through the shibboleths and the mystifications that pervade both popular and academic discourse on race. . . . The Racial Contract offers a theoretical framework that ought to serve as the starting point for any serious study of race in American society. . . . At a time when 'the epistemology of ignorance' is ascendant, we can be grateful for a book that speaks the unpalatable truth."―American Journal of Sociology

"Courageously creative"―Social Theory and Practice

"I recommend this book as an important and timely reminder of the ways in which a philosophy which ignores race is bound up with the privileging of whiteness. This is a lesson that is still to be learnt, even within the contect of feminist philosophy."―Women's Philosophy Review

"Mills's work on the Racial Contract is a major contribution to modern critical social and political thought, and will become an important, widely discussed work. It exposes, to devastating effect, the unacknowledged racial presuppositions of the entire social contract tradition, which is to say, all of liberal political theory for the past four centuries."―Robert Paul Wolff, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"Fish don't see water, men don't see patriarchy, and white philosophers don't see white supremacy. We can do little about fish. Carole Pateman and others have made the sexual contract visible for those who care to look. Now Charles Mills has made it equally clear how whites dominate people of color, even (or especially) when they have no such intention. He asks whites not to feel guilty, but rather to do something much more difficult―understand and take responsibility for a structure which they did not create but still benefit from."―Jennifer Hochschild, Princeton University

"Like Melville's Benito Cereno, this short, explosive book unflinchingly explores the centrality of race―both in its utterly open brutality and in its remarkable ability to remain hidden―to the history of the Western nation-state. Sure to provoke a heated debate far beyond the field of political philosophy, this bold and wide-ranging study makes a clear and convincing case for the view that systemic racial oppression was not an anomaly sullying otherwise universalistic assumptions about individual rights, but the context in which theorizing about such rights occurred."―David Roediger, University of Minnesota

"This is a significant and compelling work. In the modest compass of an extended essay, Mills succeeds in altering our view of a central strand of modern political thought, the social contract tradition. Inspired by the historical success of socialist critics in placing class and socioeconomic inequality on the political-theoretical agenda and by the ongoing success of feminist critics in doing the same for gender and patriarchy, Mills turns our attention to the racial domination and exploitation that have been equally pervasive features of the history of liberalism."―Thomas McCarthy, Northwestern University

Superb and revelatory book but recommend further reading
By Viktor Volk
As a white guy formerly unaware/in denial of the structural racism that's still going strong in society, this book really helped me to understand both this and the other inequalities of society. Other reviewers have definitely done the book justice, but I will also recommend that one reads after this Racism without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, because as much as Mills does an excellent job of communicating the gist of white supremacy and racist ideology, one might still subscribe to elements of the racial ideology if they are not aware of what it constitutes. Racism without Racists fills in the blanks that this book necessarily leaves in order to achieve its "punchy" nature and widespread reading.

The Philosophy That Rules Them All
By M. Rasheed
I’m a big fan of a few authors whose great work involves making sense of the massive stockpile of collected historical data by spotlighting the logic thread that connects chunks of it into potent influential viewpoints. The Racial Contract by Charles Mills is the one that rules them all, with the author revealing the foundational support structure upon which all Western philosophy and formal moral ethics theory is based. Pointedly, Mills reminds us that Immanuel Kant thought I was a subhuman, and he is the most important moral theorist in all of western thought. If you can imagine the movie The Matrix, this book functions like a “what the Matrix is, how it functions the way it does, and how we can free ourselves from it” bible. It's intended to be the long missing component of Western Philosophy, a topic which can never be fully understood without seeing it properly through the lens of 'whites-exploiting-nonwhites' that it was created from in the first place.

The world is the way it is today directly because of the global domination of the Europeans conquering, colonializing, and enslavement of non-Europeans under a White Supremacist banner (originally Christian, but it quickly morphed away from that, since the exploited could always just convert their way out of exploitation, losing the conqueror potential revenue, and we can't have THAT). This “White Peril” savagely plagued every nation on earth and took two forms:

1) the initial physical assault of the European war machine designed to break, “season,” and smash the nonwhites into a submissive state ripe for exploitation

2) the ideological indoctrination of that submissive state on the mental level.

For the former, Mills was kind enough to coldly, clinically, chillingly, remind us of certain devastating examples, and even pull others from the deep dark of centuries past. In the latter – the era we are currently in – he deftly points out the many, many examples of how the breaking has become fully part of our cultural identity, as the conqueror so wished. But the effects of chattel enslavement, jim crow, and institutional disenfranchisement upon the exploited classes are well known to students of Western history from that distressed viewpoint.

What was far more interesting to me was how these diabolical practices affected the oppressor himself. One of the perks of being the signatory of the Racial Contract is a deliberately imposed veil of ignorance, enabling one to pretend that the vast atrocities that make up the skeletal structure of Western Civilization never happened, with the gross societal imbalances being natural or genetic in origin as the official stance supported by all influential Eurocentric institutions. This personally went a LONG way towards understanding certain behaviors, like why they get mad whenever their historical wrongs are brought up and act as if it is somehow unfair, why they think the weird term “playing the race card” is a legitimate tool of argument, why they get instantly defensive whenever they hear members of the exploited classes celebrating and affirming their own skills, talents & worth, and even why they feel that the current state of a broken exploited people is the way they’ve always been.

Most of all, The Racial Contract showed how we will never finally overcome racism while the proposed solution from the conqueror class is for the exploited to simply shut up talking about it and accept the state its members find themselves in, as lesser persons requiring the conqueror’s merciful, legitimizing gaze to allow them into the ‘club’ of favor. Of course to continue in this state is unacceptable, but the only way it can be reversed is for that side to willingly set aside its ill-gotten artificial privileges and, as J.A. Rogers would say, transform “from superman to man.” In order to do this he must confront himself, recognize who he is, what he has done, and want to self-correct. He will have to go through pain to purge himself of the mantle of “Whiteness,” the political ideology of White Supremacy that he built this Eurocentric Society upon. And realistically why would he do that? He's oft demonstrated that he would much rather create a fantasyland Whitopia and live there, reinforcing his supremacist self-indoctrination with like minds, than deal with the truth of the reality he created. Mills’ book shows us how truly difficult curing our society of its Greatest Disease will truly be.
