Not for everyone...

I finished this book with very mixed feelings. I would say the author's description and disclaimer are right on. If you are looking for an erotica book with relatable characters and romantic undertones, this isn't the book for you. It felt more like a first hand account and in-depth psychological case study of kidnapping with resulting Stockholm Syndrome. Unfortunately, the 'Master' had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. His story was compelling and at times, I thought I could understand where he was coming from but every time I started to approach empathizing with him, he did something that confirmed how much of a monster he really was. He was cold-hearted and calculating throughout the entire book and Emily was subjected to torture - literally, the stuff of nightmares. I completed the book and just sat there, a little dumbfounded, and thought about everything that transpired. The book displays extreme power dynamics, female subjugation, and sexual abuse. If that's not your thing, DO NOT read this book.

Pass the soup please

This book started it all with my love of Kitty books. It had lots of twists and turns. Emily was an interesting character and the way she told the story of how she was kidnapped and taken by Master blew my mind. By the end I was speechless but I loved it. This is certainly a dark book, but the dynamics in the story telling was great. How Master acted and treated her was all part of a master plan that's taken to the very end. The psychological part of the story was great. I wouldn't want to be kidnapped by this man, but I would recommend reading this book if dark and psychological is your thing.

FIVE STAR READ FROM KITTY THOMAS!!

This is the first book I have read by Kitty Thomas and she did a fantastic job. Her book sent me on a psychological roller coaster and had me feeling so many different emotions. The story of how we can love someone who takes us and keeps us in captivity is absolutely amazing, and yet so true. This story line I believe happens in real life. What is crazy is I wanted there to be an HEA, I wanted them to be happy no matter how messed up the situation was. I loved this book it really did mess with your mind and question whether you can love your captor!

The antisemitism of the situation has tremendously aged.

This play written in 1873 is most surprising. To deal with the anti-Semitism of the Catholic kings of Castille around 1195 is definitely strange. Especially since the young king is married to the daughter of Henry II of England.

The young king falls in love with a young Jewess against all regulations at the time that kept Jews out of the way of Christians. She seduced the young king and some will openly say that she used some black magic to do so.

The man who was the regent when the king was not of age tries to summon a parliament to discuss the situation, in the absence of the king himself, which is a serious breach of feudal right. The queen suggests in this parliament in the absence of the king that the Jewish seducer should be put to death. It is never clear whether it is out of some kind of real legal or religious right or out of the consideration the girl is Jewish.

When the king arrives he disbands the parliament, tries to make it up with the queen, but in his back the queen and the ex-regent in association with the various members of the parliament go on a mission appointed to themselves by themselves to kill the girl, which they do because they make it, if not impossible, at least difficult for the king to arrive before them or before they have executed their own illegal sentence.

And that's where the plot becomes bizarre. The king confronted to all the plotters, including the queen, decides to forgive them as for himself and to punish everyone by putting them all, him included, in the hands of God: everyone is ordered to move to the borders to fight against the Moorish Moslems. God will grant them victory and hence forgive their guilt or punish them with defeat and death.

At this moment it is absolutely clear that all feudal laws have been transgressed by everyone: the king's feudal authority has been disregarded by everyone on one hand and the crimes of the plotters both disregarding the obedience they owe to the King and killing someone who had committed no real crime since the feudal lord the king is can take any woman he wants are totally going unpunished on the other hand. What's more, since the king did not use the legal and judicial authority given to him by God as the major feudal lord, the King committed an injustice for the obvious reason that the victim of the crime was a Jewess. Christians can go around killing Jews with no real authority just because they are Jews and the Christians are afraid of their supposed magic powers.

In other words this play was fitting the German context at the time when it was written, when anti-Semitism, inherited from older and darker ages, was reappearing in the German context. But today it has totally stepped out of acceptability. The play would necessitate too much rewriting and adapting to make it acceptable to the modern context. In other words it has become a tragic farce more than a dramatic work of value.

About the Author
Einav Katan-Schmid is a research associate at the Cluster of Excellence, Image, Knowledge, Gestaltung: An Interdisciplinary Laboratory, at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany. Her work with the research group “Picture-Act and Body-Knowledge” integrates choreography and somatic practices with philosophies of embodiment. She has been practicing Gaga with the Batsheva Dance Company since 2003.

Among the constitutive elements of the 'responsibility to protect' (R2P), prevention has been deemed by many as the most important. Drawing on contributions from an international group of academics and practitioners, this book seeks to improve our knowledge of how to operationalize the responsibility to prevent genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and ethnic cleansing.

The central argument is that the responsibility to prevent should be conceptualized as crimes prevention. The first part of the volume develops a strategic framework, which includes identifying the appropriate scope and substance of R2P's preventive dimension and distinguishing between 'systemic' and 'targeted' approaches. The second section examines some of the tools that can be used, and have been used, to prevent the escalation of dynamics towards the commission of atrocity crimes (tools such as sanctions, mediation, international criminal justice, and the use of military means), as well as the operational challenges that tend to obstruct global efforts to prevent such crimes. The third and final section draws lessons from actual cases of preventive action, both historical and recent, about the relative success of particular tools and approaches.

As the first edited collection of its kind, devoted exclusively to the preventive dimension of R2P, The Responsibility to Prevent intends to inform and shape the growing debate on how to approach atrocity crime prevention and how to build the capacities needed to implement the imperatives at the heart of R2P.

About the Author

Dr Serena Sharma is a Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department at King's College. Prior to joining King's Serena was based at the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict (ELAC) in Oxford University's Department of International Relations. She also held a Lectureship in International Relations at the Queen's College and a Research Fellowship at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 2010 Serena was appointed as the United Nations Association (UK) Special Advisor on the Responsibility to Protect. She holds a PhD in International Relations and a Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She has served as an editor and associate editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies. Prior to commencing her graduate studies, Serena worked with the former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy.

Jennifer Welsh is Professor and Chair in International Relations at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and a Senior Research Fellow at Somerville College, Oxford. She is co-director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict. In July 2013, Professor Welsh was named by UN Secretary Ban ki-moon as his Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect. Professor Welsh is the author and editor of several books and articles on the responsibility to protect, humanitarian intervention, the UN Security Council, and the principle of sovereignty. She sits on the editorial boards of the journals Ethics and International Affairs and Global Responsibility to Protect, and the Cambridge University Press series in International Relations. From 2014, she will be directing a 5-year research project, funded by the European Research Council, on the 'individualization of war'.
