About the Author

Robert M. McManus is the McCoy Associate Professor of Leadership Studies and Communication at the McDonough Leadership Center at Marietta College in Ohio. He co-edited Leading in Complex Worlds (Jossey-Bass) and has served as the Chair of the Leadership Education MIG for the International Leadership Association.

About the Author
Tony Ross is an author who's not afraid of the dark. In his first book, "The Ugly Duckling's Revenge," he opens the door to his own past struggles with alcoholism and depression. He shares what God did to pull him out and offers a message of hope to readers: "If God can do it for me, He can do it for you!" Many of Austen's detractors, and even quite a few of her fans, regard "Jane" as a dull homebody who wrote light, fluffy books for girls. "This attitude must end," Auerbach fumes as she tries to "strip off [the] ruffles and ringlets" that have shaped the author's public image. The Austen sketched here is an ambitious novelist, confident in her superior talent, with a subversive and biting sense of humor. Close readings of the novels, as well as the often ignored "juvenilia," reveal a rich literary sensibility dense with allusion—if you haven't read Austen already, the microscopic attention to detail here will make you pick up her books. Auerbach's scholarly background in 19th-century literature (she's a professor of English at University of Wisconsin–Madison) serves her well in this analysis, but her revisionist approach is most engaging when it wrestles with her subject's public image. She demonstrates how Austen's own family whitewashed that image by suppressing much of her correspondence, and riffs through an assortment of modern portrayals that bear little resemblance to the woman Auerbach uncovers. finally, a fresh view of jane austen

What a wonderful addition to the genre. A fresh view of Jane Austen as anything but a quiet spinster. Fabulous research on the ways her family tried to sanitize her image, and the ways publishers and critics have fallen for this trick, to the point of revising her very appearance. For the sassy author of books that pointedly, acidly and poignantly highlighted the constraints faced by women, the constricted view of Austen herself seems like some kind of perverse performance art. Auerbach's book gives Austen back her original appearance and her original personality. You will enjoy it. Guaranteed.

An excellent book on the image vs the reality of Jane Austen

Emily Auerbach may be in danger of being drummed out of academia for writing a book that is so well-researched and so detailed, and yet so readable. Auerbach's concern is the attempts by Austen's relatives and earlier literary critics to present Austen as a meek and mild cardboard saint. There is nothing particularly new in this idea, but it is very well and thoroughly done. While several biographers have made similar arguments, none is a thorough and convincing as this specialized monograph.

Auerbach pays particular attention to the representations of Austen. She seems to feel that the portrait by Austen's sister Cassandra is the only valid image. Well, arguably it is the only portrait that shows her face. Auerbach does not examine other representations of doubtful authenticity. While I see what she is driving at, I think this is perhaps a trifle overdone. Cassandra's portrait is rough and unfinished, and I wonder whether it would have been used prior to some of the aesthetic changes of "modern art", even if JA looked timid and pious. The two most commonly reproduced engravings really don't strike me as such terrible revisions of Cassandra's portrait, with the significant exception of removing the lines around the mouth, and in one case, adding a wedding ring. I don't think the ruffles are a serious distortion: it's not like JA was in the habit of dressing like a man or a particularly no-nonsense Puritan. She may have had ruffles: CA's portrait is too unfinished to assert that she didn't. At least she is still wearing her habitual cap, unlike the portrait that shows her with her hair fashionably dressed. The issues of the lines around the mouth does reveal one tension in the book (and in several recent works about JA): Auerbach is rather annoyed that Valerie Myers describes JA as looking like a peevish hamster in CA's portrait. I would have said guinea pig was more like it, but what if she does? One the one hand, Auerbach seems to want warts and all, and on the other she seems to want to insist that there were no warts. I am not certain what Auerbach is saying about the picture that represents JA sitting by a Hollywood swimming pool talking on her cell phone, but I love that particular picture -- I think it's a hoot.

But, forget trivial cavils. The most important distortions are in the written record; Auerbach has obviously done heroic research and thoroughly supports her opinions about written materials. The critiques that she has made of certain books that I liked make me want to rush back and reread them in the light of her remarks. At one point, Auerbach begins an indepth analysis of the poem from which a quote is taken. I was originally somewhat dubious about this: sometimes when I quote a line out of context, I mean it to be understood out of context, but she carefully show how the quotes throughout the book complement and support one another. I was converted to her point of view.

Auerbach believes in my favorite Jane Austen; almost terrifyingly perceptive and well aware that life is complex and there are few simple answers. Auerbach seems to have a thorough understanding of the literature and was very taken with most of her arguments.

The book has numerous blank-and-white illustrations.

I would recommend this to any Jane Austen collection.

A Monumental Search

Jane Austen's clergyman brother, along with other relatives, seemed to have some misguided need to present an image of her to the public which, sadly, has endured. Wonderful tools and guidelines

Great book! It is full of very practical tips and guidelines that will make any woman a confident speaker. There was so much that I actually hadnt read elsewhere. I love the fact that she details such simple guidelines as how to stand on stage (the champion stance); how to make eye contact (the 4 box diagram); how to walk on stage (the 3 star diagram). I think it is a must read for any professional (even men).

If you are seeking an up-to-the-minute resource that will turn you into a first rate speaker, The Well-Spoken Woman is your book. Written by top speech coach Christine K. Jahnke, this book leads you into claiming your power by confidently stating your ideas and opinions while looking polished and prepared. In short, it helps you conquer public-speaking anxiety and be taken seriously. Illustrated by Kersti Frigell with real life examples from speakers such as Ann Richards, Pat Summitt, Maya Angelou, and Melinda Gates, the material is engagingly displayed and clearly laid out.

The Well-Spoken Woman's opening premise is that a woman's power persona evolves from bringing her whole self and signature style to the podium. "Expression and engagement are hot... Dialogue, listening, and showing empathy are now valued and respected." It seems the time has finally come to express our uniquely feminine leadership from the front of the room.

Research reveals that 58% of a speaker's impact comes from body language and appearance, 38% from voice quality, and 7% from the message. Now that we have the science behind it, it's easier for a woman to identify which elements of her presentation really matter and which she should spend the most time improving. This is the part of the book I learned the most from; it changed my focus from the message itself to the way my voice carries the message, and from what I wear to how I move.

After learning what makes for an impactful live performance, Jahnke moves on to something she calls the "the five C's of message development": clarity, connection, compelling, concise, and continual. The neat thing about her "message map" technology is that it applies to all different kinds of topics. She then examines which tools work best for each "C," how to practice a speech, and whether to write it out first.

If you've ever thought of videotaping yourself, you'll welcome the chapter with tips on how to become camera ready. There's even a chapter on how to deal with the media.

At the end of the book are three appendices. The first one profiles famous speakers--that's where I learned that Bill Gates is married to a Texan, that Madeleine Albright was born in Czechoslovakia, and that Suze Orman is gay. Did you know all that? The second appendix is a chronological history, beginning in 1637, of female speakers and their claims to fame. The third appendix is a handy FAQ that includes a checklist on which your presentation can be rated.

In my work, I examine a lot of new nonfiction and I must say that I was hard-pressed to find much wrong with this book or its approach to public speaking. Jahnke's specialty publisher did an excellent job of producing the paperback, including acquiring a back cover endorsement by Gloria Steinem. This book further validates the fact that our time as female standard bearers has come.

Wow

Perfect for any woman who plans on having career goals that involve getting in front of audiences. This book seems superficially focused at first, but Jahnke does a brilliant job revealing that how one's external posture, apparel, expressions, etc are actually the sounding board of how any person views themselves- and when you don't take care of those details, the results can be destructive to your career. She also gives great outlines of how to structure speeches depending on what your goals are with your audience.

She uses tons of examples throughout political history, and I'll admit I had to use Wikipedia to look up many of her references, but I'm thankful I did. The real life stories of other women making this world a better place will push you past your own comfort zone, and hopefully pursue your own goals and dreams.

About the Author
Francesco Costanzo is an Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Penn State. He received the Laurea in Ingegneria Aeronautica from the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. After coming to the U.S. as a Fulbright scholar he received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University. His primary research interest is the mathematical and numerical modeling of material behavior. He has focused on the theoretical and numerical characterization of dynamic fracture in materials subject to thermo-mechanical loading via the use of cohesive zone models and various fi nite element methods, including space-time formulations. His research has also focused on the development of multi-scale methods for predicting continuum-level material properties from molecular calculations, including the development of molecular dynamics methods for the determination of the stress-strain response of nonlinear elastic systems. In addition to scientifi c research, he has contributed to various projects for the advancement of mechanics education under the sponsorship of several organizations, including the National Science Foundation. For his contributions, he has received various awards, including the 1998 and the 2003 GE Learning Excellence Awards, and the 1999 ASEE Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award. In addition to teaching dynamics, he also teaches statics, mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics, and mathematical theory of elasticity.

Michael E. Plesha is a Professor of Engineering Mechanics in the Department of Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Plesha received his B.S. from the University of Illinois-Chicago in structural engineering and materials, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in structural engineering and applied mechanics. His primary research areas are computational mechanics, focusing on the development of fi nite element and discrete element methods for solving static and dynamic nonlinear problems, and the development of constitutive models for characterizing behavior of materials. Much of his work focuses on problems featuring contact, friction, and material interfaces. Applications include nanotribology, high temperature rheology of ceramic composite materials, modeling geomaterials including rock and soil, penetration mechanics, and modeling crack growth in structures. He is co-author of the book Concepts and Applications of Finite Element Analysis (with R. D. Cook, D. S. Malkus, and R. J. Witt). He teaches courses in statics, basic and advanced mechanics of materials, mechanical vibrations, and fi nite element methods.

Gary L. Gray is an Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State in University Park, PA. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (cum laude) from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, an S.M. in Engineering Science from Harvard University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His primary research interests are in dynamical systems, dynamics of mechanical systems, mechanics education, and multi-scale methods for predicting continuum-level properties of materials from molecular calculations. For his contributions to mechanics education, he has been awarded the Outstanding and Premier Teaching Awards from the Penn State Engineering Society, the Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award from the American Society for Engineering Education, the Learning Excellence Award from General Electric, and the Collaborative and Curricular Innovations Special Recognition Award from the Provost of Penn State. In addition to dynamics, he also teaches mechanics of materials, mechanical vibrations, numerical methods, advanced dynamics, and engineering mathematics.

Good textbook

There are a lot of equation derivations and practice problems. Any engineering student knows how that goes. What I like particularly about this book is that at the end of each section is two or three practice problems worked out with full detail and explanation, to give the reader a typical example.
