Into the Storm: Lessons in Teamwork from the Treacherous Sydney to Hobart Ocean Race, by Dennis N.T. Perkins

Winner of the Small Business Book Awards from Small Business Trends 2013

The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is among the most demanding sailing competitions in the world. Unpredictable seas make the 628-nautical-mile course grueling under the best conditions, but the 1998 race proved to be the most perilous to date when a sudden and violent storm struck. Winds gusted over 100 mph and monstrous 80-foot waves towered over boat masts. Six sailors perished and another 55 were saved in what became the largest search and rescue operation in Australia's history.

In the face of turmoil and tragedy, a crew of "amateur" sailors piloted their tiny vessel, the AFR Midnight Rambler, not only to the finish but to overall victory. While bigger, better-equipped yachts attempted to maneuver around the storm, Ed Psaltis and his crew made the daring decision to head directly into its path. Their triumph--perhaps even their survival--owes itself to an extraordinary level of teamwork: an alchemy of cooperation, trust, planning, and execution.

Into the Storm chronicles their nearly four-day ordeal and draws parallels to the world of business, revealing 10 critical strategies for teamwork at the edge. Illustrated with examples from the story and compelling case studies, the book sheds light on what teams need to do to succeed in tough times. Finally, Into the Storm provides resources and tools to support teams as they navigate the chaotic seas of business today.

From the Inside Flap

Hurricane-force winds howled, reaching speeds of over 100 miles an hour. Waves as tall as 8-story buildings dwarfed the 35-foot sailboat, AFR Midnight Rambler. Rain and spray pelted the sailors’ faces like gravel, and the screaming of the wind made communication nearly impossible.

The boat would fly off the back of an enormous wave, and the Rambler would be suspended in midair—then drop 30 feet or more. The impact, when it came, was like crashing into cement. Then the boat would be knocked down the face of a mountainous wave, and the crew would struggle to stay alive and avoid a fatal capsize.

No one said it aloud, but they all knew that they could die in the storm. Yet in spite of their paralyzing fear, the crew held together—and they supported each other with remarkable teamwork.

Competing in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race —one of the most dangerous offshore ocean races in history—skipper Ed Psaltis and his amateur crew did more than survive the deadly storm. The AFR Midnight Rambler went on to become the overall winner of the race—the smallest boat in 10 years to win the prestigious Tattersall’s Cup.

How did they do it? What enabled the Midnight Rambler team to prevail against all odds? And what can your team learn from their experience?

Recounting a heart-stopping tale of incredible teamwork, Into the Storm reveals 10 critical strategies for Teamwork at The Edge—as applicable in the workplace as on the high seas—including:

Be willing to sail into the storm. The crew of the Rambler had a fundamental decision to make: Turn around and run for shelter, or head directly into the path of the storm. To be successful, teams must be open to taking bold action—even though the best strategy may appear risky.

Find ways to share the helm. The crew organized a “wave spotter” system to block the spray and look ahead for approaching waves. Team members need to find places where they can add value—and take the initiative to share the load.

Master the art of rapid recovery. Teams that press the upper limits of performance will inevitably have “knockdowns” and “broaches.” The crew of AFR Midnight Rambler showed an extraordinary ability to shift from survival to racing mode. To be successful, all teams need to develop the capacity to recover from setbacks quickly.

A gripping tale of triumph over adversity, Into the Storm reveals how any group, working together, can achieve the seemingly impossible.

DENNIS N. T. PERKINS is the author of Leading at The Edge and CEO of The Syncretics Group, a consulting firm dedicated to helping leaders and teams thrive under conditions of adversity, uncertainty, and change. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, he successfully completed the Sydney to Hobart Race in 2006. He lives in Madison, CT.

JILLIAN B. MURPHY is Director of Client Services at The Syncretics Group. She works in the areas of leadership, executive coaching, and team effectiveness.

From the Back Cover

The iconic Sydney to Hobart Race, a 723-mile deepwater challenge—often called the “Everest” of offshore ocean racing—is considered one of the toughest in the world. Unpredictable weather and seas make each race demanding, but in 1998, an unexpected “weather bomb” hit the fleet, creating 80-foot waves and 100-mile-per-hour winds.

Many bigger, better-equipped boats tried to maneuver around the storm, but the crew of the AFR Midnight Rambler chose to head directly into its path. After battling mountainous waves and hurricane-force winds in the Bass Strait, the tiny 35-foot boat arrived safely in Hobart, 3 days and 16 hours later—winning the coveted Tattersall’s Cup.

What were the factors underlying this incredible achievement? Into the Storm recounts the story of the Ramblers’ stunning victory, and the teamwork that made it possible—revealing powerful lessons for success in today’s demanding business environment. Illustrated with examples from the story and compelling case studies, this riveting adventure story provides effective methods you can use to:

Cut through the noise of the wind and waves. Inventive methods of communication enabled the Ramblers to stay cohesive in spite of deafening wind and waves. What can your team do when flooded by e-mails, voice mails, conflicting demands, and other distractions?

Remove all excuses for failure. One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Rambler crew was their focus on careful preparation. The crew spent hours practicing maneuvers so they could do them in the toughest conditions—in rough seas, and at night. Winning teams devote extensive time and energy to preparation, leaving nothing to chance.

Deal with the things that slow you down. Conflict is a natural occurrence in any group, but it can be productive when managed appropriately. The Ramblers’ tale of survival reveals techniques for dealing with the stress and tension that impair team performance.

The Ramblers’ success resulted from an extraordinary blend of collaboration, trust, planning, and execution. Into the Storm equips you with the tools to overcome daunting odds and win your team trophy.

Into the Storm - two books in one!
By Daniel R. Murphy
Title and Author: Into the Storm by Dennis N. T. Perkins with Jillian B. Murphy

Synopsis of Content:

Two books in one, Into the Storm is a thrilling account of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race and especially the challenges faced by the amateur crew of the AFR Midnight Rambler, a small 35 foot yacht that won the race. In the second part of the book the author analyzes the team dynamics of the winning boat and those that lost. From this analysis the authors provide excellent lessons on how to form a team, manage a team and the team dynamics that work best, especially when the team is faced with an extremely demanding challenge.

At its best the Sydney to Hobart race, in Open Ocean, from Sydney, Australia to Hobart, Tasmania, some 732 statutory miles, is a grueling challenge in sailing. It requires the best prepared boats and teams, the highest caliber of sailing skill and the most effective team work. At its worst this race is deadly. The 1998 race was unique in that the boats sailed into a hurricane they did not expect and faced extreme peril. Of the 115 boats participating only 44 reached the finish line. Twenty-five sailors were washed over board and seven died. Fifty-five sailors were rescued. It was the largest sea rescue in Australian history.

The crews that stayed in the race were faced with over 36 hours of bruising conditions. The waves reached 100 feet and winds exceeded 100 knots. The overall race winner, the AFR Midnight Rambler, accomplished what larger boats and professional sailors were not able to due to the remarkable team work.

In the second part of the book the authors discuss the ten prime lessons of team work that made the AFR Midnight Rambler a survivor and a winner. These lessons can be of great value to any team even those not faced with a life threatening challenge.

Usefulness:

Anyone who works with other people, anyone who is part of any kind of team and anyone who depends on a team working effectively will benefit from reading this book. While most readers will never face the challenge this race provided the lessons in team work taught will benefit every team no matter what the challenge.

Readability/Writing Quality:

This book is very well written. The first part is a fast paced page-turner that is entertaining, educational and inspiring. The second part provides useful analysis that is easy to understand but not over simplified.

Notes on Author:
Dennis N. T. Perkins, author of Leading at The Edge, is CEO of Syncretics Group. His group serves as consultants to helping leaders succeed. He is a graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. Jillian B. Murphy is Director of Client Services at Syncretics and works as an executive coach.

Three Great Ideas You Can Use:

1. Make the team the rock star. High profile sailors are often given special privileges on boats and they are called rock stars. Treating individual team members this way can have a negative effect on team cohesiveness and effectiveness. Making the entire team a unit and making all members equally important contributes to team success.

2. Extreme preparation for any challenge is the first essential. When the team believes they have prepared enough they need to prepare even more. Nothing can be over looked and nothing can be assumed.

3. Effectiveness at "the Edge" requires Relentless Learning by the entire team. It requires continuous innovation and improvement of skills and methods. In the highly competitive world where teams operate today this principle is essential.

Great Lessons in Teamwork
By Steve Neiderhauser
If you're going through hell, keep going.
-- Winston Churchill

Author Dennis Perkins pens his latest leadership book, Into the Storm. The author tells the story of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart sailboat race in a concise and entertaining fashion. I found myself flying through page after page to see how the story ends.

The author paints a picture of turbulent storm conditions: 80 foot waves and 105-mile-an-hour winds. While many boats decided to sail around the storm, the crew of the AFR Midnight Rambler choose to head into the storm and sail through it.

The decision to go through the storm along with the crew's talent and teamwork enabled the Rambler's team to beat professional sailers on larger and better funded boats.

After studying the treacherous 1998 race -- and the Midnight Rambler's journey of victory --Mr Perkins delivers enlightened lessons on teamwork and self organizing teams.

The author divides the book into two main parts. The story, and the strategies for teamwork at the edge. The teamwork section refers to examples from the story to reinforce concepts. Mr. Perkins' concept of self organizing teams aligns with concepts from the world of Agile software development.

The author is spot on with his view of self organizing teams, their need to practice and create real options. He also debunks the notion that teams can simply grow and organize without leadership. Teams need a leader. Teams need a skipper.

The author describes several strategies for teamwork. Let's look at two of them.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

Teams facing challenges need to prepare for every contingency.

The Rambler had multiple systems in place for planning and preparation. While the skipper is focused on steering, other crew members are thinking about sea conditions and the next leg of the race.

Successful teams master the art of bifocal vision. They have the ability to focus on current challenges while preparing for longer-term opportunities. They know how to prepare and race at the same time.

Agile Development teams know how to plan and sprint at the same time. During a two-week development sprint, they also prepare the product backlog for the next sprint. Being Agile is a trait that even the Marine Corp embraces.

The author tells the story of the US Marines assault on Fallujah in the fall of 2004. After several days of intense fighting, the battle was not going as planned. About the battle, General Richard Natonski said, "Plans very seldom survive their first contact with the enemy. Fallujah was no different."

What was different? The planning team had prepared a contingency plan. Like a quarterback calling an audible, General Natonski dialed up the new plan and won the battle of Fallujah.

To capture the spirit of flexibility, General Richard Natonski uses the phrase, "Semper Gumby." Gumby was a sixties flexible clay cartoon character who could be twisted in any manner imaginable.

For the Marines, Semper Gumby means always flexible.

And having flexible systems increases the team's speed and creative capacity.

Tenacious Creativity

Teams that win under extreme conditions share two qualities: determination and creativity. Innovation comes not from a brain trust seated in Semi Valley, instead the team doing the work sparks a new idea.

Under adverse and limiting conditions, the crew of the Midnight Rambler often invented ways to continue racing. When they lost a wind instrument, they created a device to detect wind speeds. The crew was determined to finish a race or win the whole thing by innovating.

Ed Psaltis, skipper of the Rambler, said this about the team's attitude, "There is always another move, and another option."

Summary

I've briefly touched on two of ten strategies for teamwork. After reading the book, I thought about how much the strategies could help Agile teams, or anyone who believed in the power of teams. This is one of the few books I've found that gives practical advice for leading self organizing teams.

Can you make it through the storm of life, work, etc?
By Book Him Danno
Ostensibly this is the tail of a boat race. A boat race that headed straight into a perfect storm of destruction. It details the plight of Captain Ed Psaltis and his crew aboard the Midnight Rambler as they competed in the famed Sydney to Hobart race. With great peril to their own lives they not only attacked the storm but became the overall winner of the race; a feat not typically accomplished by a small boat.

Now I am someone who gets motion sick on something as simple as a ferris wheel, the thought of ever going on a boat (even in calm waters) is nauseating. Even so I found the tenacity of the crew fascinating, especially as they faced challenges. You should recognize the classic business book/case study with this scenario. A small yet determined crew against all odds, conditions that set back lesser teams, were able to overcome and achieve the ultimate success. You begin to see where our author is coming from with this story. He analyzed the entire race and several of the boats with their crews, and was able to distill down ten principles which allowed our heroes to conquer the field. These same principles when applied to any aspect of your life, especially business, will also allow you to succeed too.

I won't go into them all but I will share one little side story that seems to be indicative of the whole project. While preparing for the race the Captain had a crew member disassemble, clean, and reassemble the cook stove in the boat. It was a time consuming process and not really that easy to complete, but especially when you consider on a four day race they wouldn't be using the stove even once. It came down to knowing your ship completely and the discipline to follow orders without delay. When in a time of crisis everyone needs to work together as a team to get things done quickly. Any delays in this process, especially when 80 foot waves are crashing down on you, can lead to accidents and death. So this act let the crew know that there will be no shortcuts on this boat and we all will work together, always. If you can't then we will need to replace you.

And so goes the whole book, taking the small microcosm of the Midnight Rambler as she battled the storm and race, and then teaching you the principles it takes to make it through. An enjoyable read that almost makes me want to try sailing too (almost, but not quite; but that is still a huge compliment in my weak stomach case). You will learn a few pointers that can help any endeavor you may wish to participate in.

This book is amazing. It is a rather short story
By Ashley
This book is amazing. It is a rather short story, but the story and illustrations really get the point across. I started reading this to my 21 month old son and when we would read the book he recognized that the girl was having milk and then going night night. Each time we would read this to him he would nurse less throughout the night. I think this book is a great transition towards gentle night weaning.

Not for Everyone
By Rachel Mehl
I'm glad to see that so many people found this book helpful. I applaud the book for tackling the subject of night weaning, but I had a few problems with this book. It looks as though the girl in the book sleeps in a formal dress and she looks really old. Reading the note in the front I learned that the author's own child was almost four when she was ready to night wean her. This was hard for me to take, considering my patience with nursing my 15 month old all night long was wearing extremely thin. Though the text is sweet, it is also a bit clunky, for example, "In the morning/ It's milkies for you/ They'll still be there / Yes, it's true". I much preferred "Sally Weans From Night Nursing" because it talks about feelings of sadness and anger and explains how when Sally was a baby she could only eat breast milk but now she is older and eats food so she does not need to nurse all night anymore. "Milkies In The Morning" seems to just repeat the message that night weaning is hard and I will be there for you all night. Then in the morning you can have "milkies".

Really helped our transition!
By Brisco
This book helped me as much as my nearly two year old. We started reading it a couple of weeks before starting night weaning. When she we would wake up and fuss, I found myself repeating lines of the book to her... And myself! Simple, lovely poem---it is what I would have said if I was not so sleep deprived! ;) night weaning is a big step for extended breastfeeding and this is a great tool.

A great help for our St. Martin Trip
By T. Hudgins
I got this along with the Cruising Guide book. Both are indispensable when trying to find the way into an anchorage. It *looks* simple enough from the charts they give you but it's great to have detailed instructions and clear pictures on where to go and what to do.

This and the book cover more area than I needed but I enjoyed looking and reading anyway.

Leeward Anchorages Opinion
By Paul Bollinger
Absolutely beautiful pictures with excellent markings for anchorage, reefs, and ship channels. It is a very good compendium to Chris Doyle's Cruising Guide to the Leeward Islands. Not as a stand-alone publication as it says, it is specific to anchorages. It will make for an excellent calendar in the future!

Provides a lot of information. Like having a friend who lives local. Picks up where charts leave off. Anchorages that are protected from weather is valuable info.

About the Author
Sarah Horton is a consultant for strategic planning for websites and web applications. She also does accessibility and usability reviews. Sarah started her career in interaction design in 1991 at the Yale Center for Advanced Instructional Media, creating award-winning interactive instructional software. She was an instructional technologist at Dartmouth College for 11 years before becoming director of web strategy and design. As director, she was responsible for planning and developing Dartmouth's digital environment, and she led a team of user-experience professionals responsible for web and media design, development, and production. More recently, Sarah was Web Strategy Project Lead at Harvard University, responsible for strategy and user experience design for the Harvard Web Publishing Initiative. Sarah is currently Director of Accessible User Experience and Design with The Paciello Group. Sarah is co-author with Patrick Lynch of Web Style Guide, now in its third edition and translated into at least eight languages. She also wrote Web Teaching Guide, which in 2000 won the American Association of Publishers award for best book in computer science. Her third book, Access by Design, combines the disciplines of universal design, accessibility, and usability into guidelines for designing websites that are universally usable.

Whitney Quesenbery is a user researcher, user experience practitioner, and usability expert with a passion for clear communication. She has been in the field for too many years, working with organizations from The Open University to the National Cancer Institute. She enjoys learning about people around the world and using those insights to design products where people matter. Before a little beige computer seduced her into software, usability, and interface design, she was a lighting designer in the theater. Like every other element of the production, lighting has to help tell the story. The scenery, lighting, costumes, direction and acting all have to work together tell the same story. She learned a lot about the craft of storytelling from watching hours of rehearsals. Whitney has served as president of the Usability Professionals' Association (UPA), on the boards of the Center for Plain Language and UXnet, and as a manager of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) Usability and User Experience Community. As a member of two U.S. government advisory committees, she is working to update accessibility requirements and to improve the usability and accessibility of voting systems for U.S. elections. Whitney is a frequent author and presenter in industry events and is a contributor to UXmatters.com. Her first publication on storytelling was a book chapter on "Storytelling and Narrative" in The Personas Lifecycle, by John Pruitt and Tamara Adlin. She's also proud that her chapter "Dimensions of Usability" in Content and Complexity turns up on so many course reading lists. You can find Whitney on Twitter @whitneyq.

At last: the book we need now on accessibility
By C. Jarrett
Some dozen years ago, I had a conversation with a web developer that went like this:

Him:"Our web site meets WCAG triple A"
Me:"But do you know whether people with disabilities can use it?"

Of course, he was right to be proud of his achievement. The WCAG guidelines, published by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the W3C consortium, are "a single shared standard for web content accessibility". It's important to meet them.

But I was also right. The purpose of the guidelines, and of all accessibility initiatives, is to create things that people with disabilities can use. For example: my father. His sight is no longer good enough for him to be able to drive, so now grocery shopping happens online. He struggles to read anything on paper, but the web means he can continue his historical research.

Up to now, there were books and resources about making things work for people with disabilities, and there was WCAG. But there were lots of gaps between them.

Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery have magnificently filled those gaps with this book. I'm going to declare an interest: they shared an early draft with me. At that stage, their intention was clear and what I wanted. But I hope they won't mind if I reveal that the draft I saw was best described as a muddle. I cheered them on - but between you and me, I wondered if they'd manage to deliver.

Well, they certainly did. A remarkably short time later, I got back my copy. Wow! This was the book that I wanted them to write. It's clear, it's engaging, it's practical. It's about making things work for people with disabilities. And it explains how what we need to do relates to the WCAG standard.

Buy it, read it, use it.

Great foundation for educating new and experienced Accessibility Specialists, UX Designers, and Web Developers
By My Opinion
This book is well organized and written in “plain language”. It’s a great read for both beginner and experienced accessibility, UX, and web development professionals.

The book takes a unique user-centered design approach to explaining web accessibility through a series of “personas” (characterizations explaining how users with different abilities approach using the web). Each chapter also includes a mapping of the chapter’s Accessible User Experience (UX) principles to the relevant WCAG 2.0 web accessibility principles (POUR) and requirements.

The personas and examples included in this book help to tell the story of why web accessibility is so important in the daily lives of many people. Moreover, the personas go beyond "traditional" examples of people with disabilities (e.g., a blind user using a screen reader to access a web page or a deaf user who requires closed captions for multimedia content). The “Lea” persona, for instance, breathes life into the “invisible” disability of fibromyalgia and explains how important keyboard accessibility is in reducing Lea’s fatigue in the workplace.

Making Accessibility Accessible for designers, programmers and testers
By Michael Larsen
When I started working at my current company, I came in right at a time when we were working on a large Accessibility project. For those not familiar with the term Accessibility, it’s the variety of standards, tools, and devices that collectively allow for individuals with disabilities to get access to the information, either on their systems or on the web, and interact with it as seamlessly as everyday users that do not have disabilities.

There are several standards that can be referenced and used as starting points for understanding accessibility, and a variety of tools, both free and commercial, exist to help the programmer and tester address accessibility issues, create fixes, and test them to see if they work as intended. Over the past year, Accessibility has become a focal point of my testing practice, one I didn’t spend much time thinking about or doing prior to working here.

While it’s important to understand accessibility, it would be even better if more people were to give thought to accessibility and testing for accessibility in their design decisions, and early in the process make the case that Accessibility to all users (or as many as possible) is an important part of our mission as product owner, creators, designers and testers. Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery approach this challenge and this mission with their book “A Web For Everyone”. More than just ways to code and test for accessibility, this book attempts to help anyone who creates software applications to develop the understanding and the empathy necessary to make design decisions that truly help to make "A Web for Everyone" possible.

So how do Horton and Quesenbery score on this front?

Chapter 1 lays out the case for why we all should consider creating A Web for Everyone, and using the “Principles of Inclusive Design” (POUR) at the outset. Inclusive design can be seen as the cross section of good design, usability and accessibility. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 standard is introduced, which encompasses various accessibility standards in use in the U.S., the U.K., the European Union, etc. Pour uses seven principles for helping design products that work for the widest range of abilities. Equitable, Flexible, Simple, Intuitive, Perceptible, Tolerant and Considerate of Space and Effort make up the core of POUR. This chapter also focuses on Design Thinking, which emphasizes understanding the human needs first, rather than letting the technology dictate the scope or direction. Combining WCAG, POUR, universal design, and design thinking, starting with the user experience, we can make great strides in designing sites and applications that allow for the greatest possibility of use by a broad variety of users and ability levels.

Chapter 2 introduces us to the idea of People First Design by introducing us to eight different people. To those unfamiliar with the idea of “personas”, this is a great introduction, and a really nice modeling of the idea. Rather than make eight abstract personas, the book outlines eight people in quite specific detail; their physical and cognitive abilities, their skill with technology and understanding/knowledge, and attitudes (motivation, emotions & determination) are fleshed out so that we can relate to them, as well as their unique challenges and abilities/disabilities. By having so much detail, we can empathize with them as though we actually know them. Personal interjection here; even with this level of detail, personas are, by necessity, incomplete. They are stand-in’s for real people. While we will have to “fill in the blanks” for a fair number of things, the more complete a persona we can make and identify with, the more likely we will be able to consider their interaction and design for them to be effective.

Chapter 3 sets the stage for the idea of “Clear Purpose”. Clear Purpose starts with understanding our audience, putting “Accessibility First” to ensure that the broadest group of people can use the product effectively. Emphasis on universal design and equivalent use are more desirable than accommodation, since accommodation usually makes for a less fulfilling experience.

Chapter 4 focuses on Solid Structure. An emphasis is placed on the various markup and presentation options including the options associated with HTML, HTML5 and WAI-ARIA, separating the content from the presentation (yes, CSS is useful for accessibility as well as for eye candy) and optimizing content to be organized in a way that screen readers and assistive technologies can get to the the most important content first. Most important, sites with well defined structure help to remove barriers, and give users confidence they can find what they need when they use a site or an application.

Chapter 5 covers Easy Interaction. By focusing ion making interactions easy for those with disabilities, we go a long way in developing a product that is easier to interact with for everyone. Focusing on keyboard interactions, having codes in both HTML and CSS that leverage assistive technologies to provide more details or outline areas where the keyboard has focus, or to speak to the user where the keyboard focus currently is. Easy interaction enables users to control the interface, with large enough controls. It avoids taking unexpected actions for users that they can do on their own. Easy interaction also includes both preventing and handling errors in an accessible way.

Chapter 6 is all about orientation and navigation, or as the book puts it, “Helpful Wayfinding”. This consists of being consistent with design elements, mapping items similarly on pages so that the look and feel remains consistent, differentiating where it really makes sense to differentiate, and include information as to where a user actually was in the site (think of the bread crumb trail we often take for granted). ARIA roles work with HTML and HTML5 tags to help define where on the page the user is to that assistive technology can reference those rage and provide meaningful alerts and signposts. It also gives some good suggestions as to how to pattern links and navigation items, such as using action words as links, presenting links in an obvious and consistent way, including images as clickable elements, keeping the navigation process simple, and resisting the temptation to bury content in layers of submenus.

Chapter 7 focuses on Clean Presentation, or placing a focus on the visual layout, images and fonts for easy perception. To get the best effect from this, though, Clean Presentation looks to take into consideration a variety of visual disabilities, as well as allowing users the ability to customize the look and feel, using native browser options or physical controls in the site or app itself (think of the font enlarging/shrinking of a Kindle eBook as an example). Stylesheets can help considerably in this regard, and can allows the visuals to me modified both at the user preference level and at the device level (laptop, vs. tablet. vs. phone). Making a contrast between the text and background, font size, style, weight, and spacing, as well as the contrast for images can also help make a site more usable.

Chapter 8 gets to the heart of the matter regarding “Plain Language” Not to be confused with “summing down” content, but writing to the intended audience with words and terms they will understand. Plain language also helps drive content presentation. Clear headings, columns to break up text, small paragraphs, bullet points and use of bolding, italics and links. In general, make it a point to read your site regularly, and incorporate your personals to see what they would think of your presentation.

Chapter 9 covers Accessible Media. Much of what we post requires visual cues. Images and audio/video are the most obvious, and there are differing challenges depending on the individual and the disability. For sighted users, image rich sites can be little more that large blank canvases with a few words here and there. Audio files cannot easily be consumed by those who cannot hear. This is where aspects like alt tags for image, closed captioning for video files, transcripts for audio files, and other ways to describe the content on the page will goa long way towards letting more people get involved with the content.

Chapter 10 brings us to Universal Usability, or put in a different way, a focus on a great user experience for all can go a long way towards helping incorporate many accessibility ideas for everyone. Technology should not have to be fought with to get a job done, or to accomplish a goal. Well designed sites and apps anticipate user interaction, and help guide them to their completion, without requiring a lot of redirection or memorizing of options to get a task completed. A popular phrase is “Don’t make me think!” the site or app should allow the user to focus on their goal, not trying to figure out how the site or app needs to have them achieve it.

Chapter 11, In Practice, looks to unify the concepts in the book into a holistic approach. More than just using the techniques described, the organization as a whole needs to buy into the value of accessibility as a lifestyle and a core business goal. Start by evaluating your current site and seeing where you re doing well and where changes would be valuable. Determine what training, skills, people power and infrastructure will help you get from A to B. Also, while personas are a great heuristic, they do not take the place of flesh and blood people dealing with the various disabilities we want to help make our software accessible to. Look to interact with and develop relationships with real people who can give a much clearer understanding of the challenges, so that you can come up with better solutions.

Chapter 12 considers The Future, and what A Web for Everyone might look like. Overall goals include a web that is ubiquitous, where accessibility is part of design from the ground up. Another goal is flexibility as a first principle of design. Our interaction should be invisible, or at least stay out of our way as much as possible. Methods in which we will get to that place will involve being more inclusive and diverse in our understanding of who uses our products, and how they use them. We’ll need to make accessibility part of the way we think, not as an afterthought after we’ve done everything else.

The book ends with three appendices. Appendix A is a brief listing of all the principled discussed in each chapter, and would make for an excellent starting point for any story workshop or test design session. This is a great set of “What if?” questions for software testers. Appendix B is a summary of the WCAG 2.0 standard and how the various sections map to the chapters of the book. IF you want to get into the nitty-gritty details of the spec, or get access to other links and supporting documentation, that’s all here. Appendix C gives a lengthy list of additional reading (book, links, etc.) about the topics covered in the book. If you want to know more about any specific area or heading, check here.

Bottom Line:

"A Web For Everyone" gives a lot of attention to the the personas and real world examples of accessible design, which are interspersed through all of the chapters. We see their plights, and we empathize with them. These persona examples are humanizing and very helpful. They help us see the what and the why of accessibility. We see many interesting design ideas shared, but we get only a few examples of the how. Implementation is discussed, but only a few ideas are fleshed out beyond the basic prose. This is not necessarily a criticism, because A Web for Everyone does a really good job explaining the what’s and the why’s of accessibility design. High level design ideas and technology briefs are handled quite nicely. A variety of coding examples to show the ideas in actual practice, not so much. If you are looking for a guide to coding sites for accessibility with exercises and examples to create, this isn’t that book. If, however, you want to get inspired to make, test or promote software that can be used and usable by a broader variety of people, this book does an admirable job.

Soul Prints: Your Path to Fulfillment, by Marc Gafni

A charismatic American philosopher living in Jerusalem, Marc Gafni has become an important voice on religion and spirituality through his enormously popular weekly television program; now, his universal message comes to America, fully realized, in his first book. Marc Gafni follows in the tradition of Rabbi Harold Kushner and Ram Dass, bringing wisdom to everyday experience and using spiritual stories to teach us how to live happier lives. The secret is to "live your story," and we do this by identifying our unique selves -- our "soul prints." Only then can we connect on a deeper level with the world and with those sharing it alongside us. Soul Prints speaks to all readers, regardless of religious beliefs or practices. Using the power of myth -- Biblical and folk -- and drawing on his own highs and lows, Gafni offers advice on how to overcome the obstacles of an increasingly disconnected world to form bonds based in truth and love: connections that begin with our true selves.

Amazon.com Review
Rabbi Marc Gafni is a Kabbalist, someone who studies the mystical interpretations of biblical books, handed down over many generations. Through his studies Gafni became fascinated with the power of biblical myths to awaken the soul while also helping us understand our earthly purpose. The more he delved into the Kabbalah, the more he became interested in the individual blueprint of the soul--how each person seemed born to a different soul-driven destiny.

"Your soul print is your personal signature," explains Gafni. "It is the contour and content of your soul--it's character.... It is even more singular to you than your genes and chromosomes."

In blending his two passions, "soul prints" and myths, Rabbi Gafni created an ambitious spiritual self-help book filled with sage advice on living in connection with the soul. Don't be squeamish about the self-help mission. Gafni's narrative reads more like a personal counseling session in a rabbi's private office--intelligent, warm (expect lots of chuckles), occasionally tangential, but mostly filled with practical guidance. He also inserts numerous sidebars that offer "Soul Print Practices," such as "Make a list of the seven wonders of your world" or "Take sensual risks. Be creative with your senses in how or what you eat, or make love." --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Just as fingerprints are unique, so, too, says Rabbi Gafni, are soul prints: each human soul has an individual mark that it leaves behind on everyone it touches. Gafni, dean of the Merlitz Public Culture Center in Israel, weaves together autobiographical reflections with tips and exercises designed to help readers discover their soul prints and find fulfillment. Gafni begins with the premise that everyone is lonely and many people look for cures in places where they will never find them, such as sexual encounters. Many of the exercises in this splendid book are designed to help readers confront, and then cure, that loneliness. Gafni suggests that readers share what they learn while reading this book with a lonely person they know. Readers are then asked to make a "Soul Print box" that contains the things that are most important to them, and then to show the contents of that box to one other person. Gafni advocates the practice of random acts of kindness: "Bring happiness to one person each week, for no apparent reason." His tremendous breadth distinguishes this volume from so many spiritualized self-help tomes. He draws on the fantasy novella Flatlands and the teachings of Talmudic rabbis, on psychologists and prophets. He tells his own stories and biblical stories. Though steeped in Jewish wisdom, this book will be accessible and helpful to readers of many faiths. Gafni occasionally states the obvious (as when he notes that if "after a long day of living your life, you feel as if you are on the verge of tears," something might be amiss). But those few banalities can't ruin this insightful book. (Mar.)Forecast: This book is being published in conjunction with a major PBS special by the same title, scheduled to air in early March; this should have a significant impact on book sales. Gafni will be doing a 10-city author tour later that month.

this book touched my heart
By Amalia
I seldom write reviews although I am an avid reader of a wide variety of books. This book, however is one which has inspired me and motivated me to make necessary changes in my life.
Rabbi Gafni has the gift of making the stories of the Bible come to life. I have read or heard many of these stories before, but have never been able to relate to them in a way that actually touched me emotionally. I enjoyed the Soul Print Practice sections of the book particularly because they helped clarify areas of my life that needed healing and a perhaps a new perspective.
This book is about living your truth, no matter what your religious background or beliefs.

Beautiful book that will help you connect with others
By Blaine Greenfield
Heard the taped version of SOUL PRINTS, written and read by Marc
Gafni . . . he is a rabbi and dean of the Merlitz Public Culture Center in
Israel, but don't be put off by either that title or his religion . . . this
is a beautiful book that begins with the premise that everyone is
lonely and many people look for cures in places where they will
never find them.

Gafni further contends that our soul prints can help us--and others--deal
with this loneliness . . . just as fingerprints are unique, so too
are soul prints--the individual marks left behind by each human soul
on everyone it touches.

One key to finding happiness in life is to share these soul prints
with others . . . and that point is movingly brought home by Gafni's tale
of a rabbi who told his family he was too sick to go to temple
on Yom Kippur (the holiest day of the year for Jews) . . . when they
all leave, the rabbi then sneaks off to play golf . . . on the very first
hole, he hits a tremendous drive and it goes right into the cup
for a hole-in-one . . . yet because he can't share his story with
anybody because he has told a lie, it is meaningless.

In addition, Gafni says there's an easy way to see if another
person of the opposite sex is right for you . . . you have to be
able to share your childhood with him or her; if you can't do this,
then you can't share your soul print and you won't have a
meaningful relationship.

Lastly, I liked how the author gave practical suggestions
on ways to connect with others . . . for instance, in a
restaurant, never let yourself be served without knowing the
name of your waiter or waitress . . . when you do this, you'll
see the other person for the first time.

I've lately adapted this last idea and have noticed quite
a difference, in my approach as well as my server's.

Treasure Chest
By A Customer
This book's a Gold Rush - Rush out to Read it! Soul Prints - What a treasure chest of stories and teaching and guidance! My husband and I are both voraciously reading it - fighting over who gets to read it when! Gafni is one of those alchemist authors who knows how to turn the written word into gold. Every page sparkles-whether it be through spell binding stories, transformative "soul print practices", or deep mystical insights. Gafni draws from what seems to be a fathomless reservoir of wisdom, and knowledge of the mystical mechanics of the world. And yet, he expresses these depths and mysteries in the most accessible of ways. Making the complex, quite simple. Likewise he can take the most common of ideas and cast it in a new light. Making the seemingly simple, quite complex. For instance, he returns us to the beauty of the most basic of Biblical texts, taking Biblical stories we have heard a dozen times and revealing in them insights we never would have imagined-insights that can revolutionize the way that we live in the world. This book is the perfect read for the mystical initiate, or for the business man, for a person searching, or for a person who has found, yet wants deepening. This alchemist author helps us bcome alchemist readers - able to turn our most common characteristics into Soul Prints of gold. Eureka!!!
