Modern philosophy at its best

In this book, one of the world's most important and under-recognized philosophers addresses what is arguably the major cultural question of our times: Can the humanistic and even religious view of human nature be reconciled with science?
Flanagan is a witty, entertaining writer, who eschews the jargon and abstractions that deaden the prose of the vast majority of academic philosophers. And unlike philosophers such as Daniel Dennett, Flanagan is less intent on demonstrating his cleverness than on presenting his thoughts as clearly as possible. Although he is steeped in knowledge-from Aristotle to the latest findings of cognitive science-Flanagan wears his learning lightly. His writings are rigorous enough for professionals-philosophers and scientists paid to ponder the mind-body problem and other enigmas-while remaining accessible for lay readers. And shouldn't philosophy be for everyone?
Flanagan is basically a scientific materialist, who believes that the mind is a function of the brain and cannot exist independently of it. In The Problem of the Soul, he dismisses such supernatural concepts as God, the immortal soul, life after death, and even free will, defined as freedom from physical causality. But he argues convincingly that if we jettison a supernatural outlook, we are left not with an anything-goes nihilism but with an even more secure foundation for morality.
Flanagan deftly draws upon his personal experience to explore certain questions-for example, what concept of a self makes sense, given all the changes we pass through in life? He reveals his family's history of alcoholism, his decision to stop drinking, his recent interest in Buddhism. In the hands of a lesser writer, this approach would seem self-indulgent, but Flanagan makes it poignant and compelling. There is a warmth suffusing his prose that counteracts the chill of his ideas, and even lends them a kind of tacit support: ultimately, it is simple human decency that will save us (if we can be saved) and not faith in some supernatural metaphysics.
A book like this is bound to provoke-indeed invites-objections, and I have a couple. One is that the free will Flanagan attacks-a dualistic version that assumes absolute freedom from physical causality--is something of a straw man. I believe that science undermines any meaningful concept of human choice, including the one that Flanagan articulates.
I also see a potential weakness in Flanagan's concept of an "ethical ecology." He suggests that, just as ecologists seek to understand the factors that contribute to a healthy ecosystem, so should our ethics aim at delineating conditions conducive to our "flourishing." The tenets of ecology-for example, the notion that diversity of species leads to ecological stability-are contentious, to say the least, and hence might not provide the kind of the secure foundation for human ethics that Flanagan envisions. But of course Flanagan wrote this book not to give us answers but to incite further reflection and dialogue. He succeeds splendidly. We need philosophers like him.

Although I am wondering if I'll have to do all the other work Flanagan has done before I get the nerve to publish anything. Cognitive neuroscience, psychology, literature (with minor side interests in sociology and religion)--it's a wonder that I can understand anything the man says. But I found this book to be one of the clearest, most enjoyable things I ever read.
The Problem of the Soul is an amazing synthesis in which ethics meets the scientifically savvy 21st century--it's the book Nietzsche would have written if he had been interested in being understood. No other single text has had such an impact on the way I think, and I am in awe of the man who can build so much of the argument from scratch while getting so much right. Flanagan does indeed have the hands of a surgeon: there's no flinching here, and it's a light touch the whole way through. Whatever pain might be involved in the excision is masked by this surgeon's crooked grin; good humor is a great palliative.
This book is for people who want to enjoy reading something that will challenge how they think. It's an amazing primer for academic philosophy (frightening how much I learned without even realizing it--I can't tell you how much I wish I'd read it before I took all those stupid courses), and it reads like a novel. I can honestly say that I've never before had the experience of having to make myself put down a philosophy text in order to get some work done. It was a beautiful thing.
Written for a general audience, The Problem of the Soul comes across as a late-night conversation with a really exciting person you just met at the local pub or coffeehouse. It's written with style and personality, and you truly feel as if you get to know this guy. Which turns out to be a good thing--he's a really great person.
I don't want to give the impression that I'm all for everything that Flanagan says. Actually, I'm the president of the group responsible for promoting interfaith dialogue on campus at Duke University, and I have something of a vested interest in refuting many of his arguments about matters of faith. I wish I could. I do believe there are some valid responses to most of the things he says, but I also believe that all those responses involve some serious re-evaluations. One thing I'm certain of is that all religious people have an undeniable obligation to read this book (to themselves, to their faiths). I applaud Flanagan for the effort he puts into opening up a genuine dialogue: he shows extreme sensitivity in treating people of faith as fellow creatures worthy of dignity and respect (even as he challenges the very beliefs that are generally thought to provide the foundation for that faith).
Reading this book refreshed my vision and rekindled my passion for philosophy. If I had to recommend just one philosophy book for each and every person to read, this would be it. Do yourself a favor and buy it. For those with slightly more specialized interests, you might want to check out Flanagan's other works. Varieties of Moral Personality and Dreaming Souls have become my new favorites; I'm going after the philosophy of mind stuff next. But none of them beats The Problem of the Soul, so make sure you get that one first.

One of my favorite books!

I am a school psychologist who has used this book for 15 years with intermediate students. Ms. Anderson has translated the concepts of Ellis' Rational Emotive Therapy into a book which through pictures and examples clearly helps children grasp that feelings are not caused directly by events, but by what we think about the events. This key notion creates the possibility for change in how we interact with the world around us, and the book provides specific examples and practice in how to change our language to reflect more realistic beliefs about this world. Students enjoy the chapters and exercises, while learning how to interact more appropriately with peers and adults and to become more in control of their own behavior. I've also used the concepts effectively with parents because the book is so clear and pragmatic. I think parents could use the book effectively with their own children to discuss how we react to other people and the choices we have in our behavior. Best for ages 8 on up. A great book!

About the Author
Andrea A. Lunsford is professor of English at Stanford University and also teaches at the Bread Loaf School of English. A past chair of CCCC, she has won the major publication awards in both the CCCC and MLA. For Bedford/St. Martin’s she is the author of The St. Martin's Handbook, Seventh Edition,�The Presence of Others, Fifth Edition, and The Everyday Writer, Fifth Edition, as well as the Sixth Edition of both Everything’s an Argument books.

John J. Ruszkiewicz is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he has taught literature, rhetoric, and writing for more than thirty years. A winner of the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award, he was instrumental in creating the Department of Rhetoric and Writing in 1993 and directed the unit from 2001-05. He has also served as president of the Conference of College Teachers of English (CCTE) of Texas. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is coauthor, with Andrea Lunsford, of The Presence of Others (2008) and Everything’s An Argument� (2007), and coauthor, with Andrea Lunsford and Keith Walters, of Everything's An Argument with Readings (2007).�Keith Walters is professor of applied linguistics at Portland State University. Much of his research focuses on language and identity in North Africa, especially Tunisia, and the United States. He has also taught freshman composition and English as a second/foreign language.

It's over my students' heads

I am disappointed with this text overall. I like the first chapter on everything's an argument and love the images for illustration and anlysis. But in teaching rhetorical analysis and other types of arguments, I have found that the text uses student examples that are too sophisticated to help my first year students who are taking the course for general education credit. Where do they get the student examples? I suggest taking some from various levels, not just the best.

The explanations of the arguments are thorough but troublesome in that the author's political assumptions are embedded. Some students have objected to them. My students are also having difficulty digesting the text and using it to develop their own argument papers. I find that I am supplementing too much to support the text. Bottom line: I won't use this text again for a general first year course.

On the other hand, I like having the section on writing and revision application with each chapter. It would help to show a paper in process from start to finish.

fantastic though possibly challenging

I thoroughly enjoyed using this book in my AP English Language class as a Junior in high school. Some of the more negative reviews complain that it was over the students' head or that college students don't understand satire, but that was not at all the case in my high school class. The examples are relevant and engaging. The text doesn't talk down to the students. The only con is that the authors political views do come through every once in a while, which contradicts the book teaching against bias, but overall if the students can pick up on it as we all did very quickly, it becomes a lesson in bias, and in no way detracts from the book (especially as the students are learning to read everything with a grain of salt and engage all texts with their own point of view). Overall this is my favorite text book I have ever been assigned, and was always delighted to be assigned a chapter to read.

Not Solutions Manual

We thought this was a solutions guide to the problem sets in the Accounting Principles book but it is NOT. Good or bad? New or old? The rich connotations of the word 'biotechnology' reflect a history that stretches back more than seventy years. To some, the concept describes the evolving crafts of industrial production using micro-organisms. To others, biotechnology is a product of the recombinant techniques only recently developed by molecular biologists. It has been seen simply as a means of wealth production and as a new kind of technology--sometimes as distinctively benevolent and at all other times as particularly dangerous.

Robert Bud shows how the hopes and fears for the combination of biology with engineering have been an integral part of the history of the twentieth century, including the Great Depression of the 1930s, the two world wars, and the more recent anxieties over genetic and entrepreneurial industry. Skillfully, the author relates biotechnology's origins in the chemistry and microbiology of the nineteenth century. Personalities with influential roles in its subsequent development such as Chaim Weizmann, Kark Ereky, Patrick Geddes, Lewis Mumford, Joshua Lederberg, and Jeremy Rifkin, among many others, are discussed. Analysis of the changing roles and hopes for biotechnology in government and society takes the book to the end of the 1980s, when recombinant DNA techniques had become the dominant driving force behind what today we think of as biotechnology.

This book will help you to climb higher in Consciousness...
As a Vegetarian I was a but ashamed to read the "true facts" in this book about my meatless diet, -which kind of hurt my feelings, however I want to change and change is sometimes painful. You will be surprised to read some of the many facts in this book about eating meat, eating vegetables, composition of the blood thru diet and much much more. I suggest you go to google books and preview some of the literature if you really can't wait. But to be truthfully honest, if you are even here reading this review right now, then this is a book that you will love and keep for future reference as you evolve and transform, becoming more intelligent, and more loving. Indeed, you will also find quite shocking information about the history of mankind degeneration; just reading this book will give you a different outlook on life. What you see with your two eyes when you "wake up" every morning is just an illusion, which many people never escape from. Arm yourself with Knowledge! I urge you! The fire of knowledge must be ignited inside you or your life will never amount to any significance. I am in college, but college doesn't teach you a single thing about "How to go beyond" It's just all about money. If you really want to go beyond, you'll have to do it yourself. Your not the only person who is questioning the idiotic way of life that many people are living. (Forgive them for they know not what they do). Arm yourself with real knowledge, Go Beyond, and you will understand all that you have been wondering. I am not sure what much to say, but you should definitely buy this Book. I really love this eye-opening book!

Andrew Norton Webber recommended Man's Higher Consciousness during one of his interviews. It took nearly a year of listening to his interviews before I decided to give this book a read. I found it so interesting and so compelling that I bought a second copy so that I have an everyday copy to carry with me and a backup in case I lose the original.

Since beginning Man's Higher Consciousness, I have read about ten other Hilton Hotema books and I really wish the publishers would make all of Hilton Hotema's books available in electronic form. It appears that the author sometimes repeated entire chapters from his prior books, but the Hotema material is such uncommon knowledge that the repetitions were beneficial and worked well for me.
