Excellent For Serious Believers!

The book systematically takes you through every possible situation faced by a christian leader. A must for a 2nd year Theology student and every christian leader. Use it as training resource for leaders in small group sessions. The book is very meaty and should be carefully studied piece by piece. Be prepared to be challenged and prepared to change! You will use this book over and over again. Only for serious students!

Must reading for current and aspiring Christian leaders

Damazio has been able to take the word of God and much wisdom of experience and bring it together in this book. He presents the model of the Christian leader as one who has love, a servant's heart, who is committed to Christ and the Body of Christ. As one who has been in secondary leadership roles for most of my life, I have been able to see places where Christian leaders have failed, and how the wisdom in this book could have helped them avoid it. The attributes of leaders, good and bad are poigant, I have seen them played out many times. There is one area I question, his quick restoration of a fallen leader to LEADERSHIP as I have seen this cause a subsequent fall. This is not consistent with the other areas of the book and I wonder if he may have never had to deal with this first hand.

A Great Study For Discipleship

I have used this book 4 times to disciple men's groups for leadership. It starts a bit slow, but the material is incredible and even when it is slow, it is an amazing catalyst for discussion. Mr. Damazio has definitely done his homework and this book is a valuable resource for any leader's library.

About the Author

Anja Grebe teaches art history at the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg/Germany. She is taking part in numerous international research projects and exhibitions and has published extensively on medieval and modern art history. Grebe is the author of The Louvre: All the Paintings and The Vatican: All the Paintings. She lives in Erlangen, Germany.

Erich Lessing has been documenting the culture and fine arts of Europe and the Near East for more than fifty years. He is arguably today's leading independent photographer of the arts in the Western World. He created the Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archive which is an extensive image library featuring over 40,000 high resolution images from over 500 museums and private collections throughout the world, including a thorough coverage of such institutions as: The Louvre and the Mus�e d'Orsay in Paris, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Uffizi in Florence, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Prado in Madrid, and many more. Having worked as a photographer all over the world for more than six decades, he has published more than 40 books with his art photography. He lives in Vienna and travels regularly to Paris and other art capitals of the world.

Henri Loyrette has been the President and Director of the Mus�e du Louvre since April 2001. Prior to his appointment at the Louvre, Loyrette served as Director of the Mus�e d'Orsay from 1994 to 2001, and Curator at the Mus�e d'Orsay from 1978 to 1999. With a master's degree in history, Loyrette was a scholar at the French Academy in Rome from 1975 to 1977. A member of the Acad�mie des Beaux-Arts since 1997, Loyrette is also a trustee of the Soci�t� de l'Histoire de l'Art Fran�ais and Cit� de la Musique.

The Louvre: All the Paintings - Book and DVD

I bought the book and DVD because my husband and I hadn't been able to visit the Louvre in our recent short trip to Paris. Even though I already had two large art books on the Louvre, I thought that this would be a great way to see the paintings that I had missed. The book itself is excellent; it is the DVD that I have major problems with. The disk claims to be a DVD which means that it should hold a little over 4 GB of data. This theoretical DVD only holds 228 MB of data including the software program which doesn't work very well for viewing the images; a CD holds almost 700 MB of data. The images on the DVD total 194 MB, and half of those 6,753 items are extremely small thumbnails. The largest image is 2,194 KB. I expected to get a DVD with relatively high quality images of the paintings and was extremely disappointed with what I received. Whoever put this DVD and software program together should be ashamed of themselves.

Disappointing presentation of a highly anticipated book

This book depicting all of the Louvre's paintings was highly anticipated. Here in one imposing volume are some of the most glorious works of art ever created. But my enthusiasm is tempered by several unfortunate failures of execution. The book is sturdy and solid and it comes with a very attractive slipcase. It is, however, quite heavy (15-18 pounds) and slightly unwieldy so that manipulating it can be difficult. The majority of the book's photos are fairly small making details hard to see without using a loup or magnifying glass. One gets the impression that a project of this magnitude requires multiple volumes that are both manageable and contain larger visualizations for easier study.

Because of the relatively diminutive nature of the bulk of the book's illustrations, a DVD with larger pictures would at least offer some compensation. Unfortunately the DVD contains mostly tiny thumbnail-sized photos, many of which failed to open on my Vista laptop. The DVD does not appear to be completely functional (XML code instead of English in a central panel that appears on every page, a red X through thumbnails when attempting to access additional information). Also, the browser-based program will not work with Google's Chrome browser. I had to devise a work around to get the DVD to open properly when I switched to Internet Explorer because the balky program insisted on continuing to open in Chrome. All in all I found this extremely worthy project somewhat compromised by these shortcomings. The book's several hundred featured illustrations (which are larger) offer a tantalizing glimpse of how it might have been improved. They, at least, provide the Louvre's brilliant works of art with the impact they deserve. I wish there had been more of them.

Ignore the "DVD" and go for the book

Book review:

This is a somewhat odd book attempting to catch every painting in the Louvre's permanent collection. I can picture it for folks who missed paintings on their last visit, or as a completist's book. On the other hand the collection is, by definition, uneven and many of the works are frankly uninteresting to many or most readers. Still, the image quality on the paper is quite good, many of the images are small (divide the 3000+ paintings out over 780ish pages), but I think you get a good experience for the money. At the discounted price on amazon, this is a beautiful coffee table book. Not quite as elegant as Taschen volumes, but reasonably substantial. 4 stars

DVD review:

Just ridiculous! This is something you could imagine being foisted on people who had a CD-ROM drive back in 1996. Custom software, tiny images, and just a 1/20th of the disk used. Although this could have been a great item, high quality digital images of all of the paintings seems like a 2011 natural, that isn't what's here. I'd just ignore the disk, or try it to laugh at the stupidity of it. 0 stars

If you buy for the paper book, you'll be happy. The DVD is completely worthless except perhaps as an example of how poorly new media can be employed.

Good enough... let's read.

It's the book I needed. It's not as easy a read but her, it's grad school. It is what it is. Sorry I don't sound so enthusiastic but some of this material is redundant. About the Author
Ioan James is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and has had a distinguished career as a research mathematician. In recent years he has become interested in the history and development of scientific disciplines and the scientists involved. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1968. He is also the author of Remarkable Mathematicians, Remarkable Physicists, and Remarkable Biologists, all published by Cambridge University Press.

Interesting but....

Having made my living as an engineer (electrical), I was looking forward to learning something about the people that preceded me in the profession. Overall, I would have to say my expectations exceeded what the book provided. The writing was a little sloppy factually and grammatically in places, which was a bit distracting at times (perhaps a more thorough proof-reading would have helped). The book focuses on the lives of these remarkable people, which I did enjoy learning about. However, for many of the lesser known individuals, I was left wondering about their engineering contributions. That wasn't a problem for those I knew (e.g. Bell, Edison & Shannon), but it did leave a hole on the others. A short summary of the contributions and significance of their work would make this a much better read.
