...Hope is a given in a romance such as this. In outward appearances, the story seems simple, reminiscent of early tales, but this is far from those. About the Author
Karin Kallmaker's two dozen and counting lesbian fiction novels include the Goldie and Lammy award-winning The Kiss that Counted, Above Temptation, Just Like That and Sugar and span lesbian romance, erotica and lesbian fantasy/speculative fiction. Translations include Spanish, French, German and Czech. More than five dozen short stories have appeared in anthologies and collections from numerous publishers. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner and their two children.

Another enjoyable book from Kallmaker.

Karin Kallmaker is one of my favorite authors, and she did not disappoint with her newest offering, Captain of Industry. It's a story about priorities, making choices and giving up what we want to get something we need. The characters are human and flawed and therefore much more relatable. On the face of it, most would have nothing in common with the main characters, Jennifer Lamont, a beautiful model/actress and Suzanne Mason, a brilliant venture capitalist. However Kallmaker has the talent to bring the lofty down to street level, and we find ourselves rooting for the bad girl to have her happy ever after. I also have special fondness for any book that makes me look something up and am proud to now be able to identify a Larch from 500 feet.

A Good Read

I so wanted to give this a five-star review, but just couldn't do it.
The book was an excellent one. The secondary characters did a great job of filling out the story. The handling of any political issues, specifically misogyny and homophobia, was artfully done. Sometimes as a reader you can feel like you are being bludgeoned with those topics instead of it fitting as essential theme of the book. So kudos to the author on that score.
What held me back from giving this book that fifth star was the imbalance in likability between the two main characters. Not that I was actively cheering agains either of them. But as much as I wanted to empathize with both of the heroines, I just couldn't. Maybe I'm too much of a romantic, but I have to think that a person can only burn so many bridges before a relationship is irreversibly damaged. It wasn't the choices that character was making, the author did a great job of describing how she felt pressured by a hypocritical industry into making the decisions she did. A strong and independent person has every right to make those same choices. It was the how that rubbed me the wrong way. Man or woman, gay or straight, crushing someone as a way of protecting your own feelings is not okay.
All-in-all this was a very enjoyable read by an author who continues to do good work. Just be prepared to have to forgive one of the main characters for being repeatedly and unnecessarily cruel.

I wondered how she was going to make us like Jennifer Lamont--Good job, kiddo!

Three stars for the story, 1 star for being able to make me like Jennifer Lamont. Very good story about putting your goals first, and that there can be some real costs to coming out of the closet. I liked Suzanne but did not feel I knew her any better at the end of the book--she was somewhat of a surface character compared to other partners in other books. I loved the scene when Selena and Suzanne both realized the other one had also been Jennifer's lover--very funny.
