Obama argues with himself on almost every page of this lively autobiographical conversation. He gets you to agree with him, and then he brings in a counternarrative that seems just as convincing. Son of a white American mother and of a black Kenyan father whom he never knew, Obama grew up mainly in Hawaii. After college, he worked for three years as a community organizer on Chicago's South Side. Then, finally, he went to Kenya, to find the world of his dead father, his "authentic" self. Will the truth set you free, Obama asks? Or will it disappoint? Both, it seems. His search for himself as a black American is rooted in the particulars of his daily life; it also reads like a wry commentary about all of us. He dismisses stereotypes of the "tragic mulatto" and then shows how much we are all caught between messy contradictions and disparate communities. He discovers that Kenya has 400 different tribes, each of them with stereotypes of the others. Obama is candid about racism and poverty and corruption, in Chicago and in Kenya. Caveat Emptor - Dreams From My Father

Be careful what you order. There are two editions of this book; the 1995 edition and the revised 2004 edition. Note that the 2nd edition lists the 1995 printing first, but that not be what you get. I spent $115 hoping to get the rare, first edition, which supposedly has photos and different text. Instead, I got a hardcover version of the 2004 revised printing. Since the 1995 book was published when Obama was still a relative nobody it stands to reason the first edition had a limited circulation. Don't order the book unless you can see a picture of the cover. If it looks like the 2004 paperback, then it's not the 1st edition.

Read all of the book and learned a lot about his lack of good Father attention. A lesson for any child without a parent around that you make your own decisions in life and your own future. He did have a wild side in his teen years and could have gone a different direction entirely. Applaud people of Hawaii that saw a young man with future potential and invested in him. Credit also to his grandparents for assisting in his raising. No matter what so many say I think he has been a good president at large and has the demeanor and temperament and intelligence to be our American President. Thank You Barack. :-)

Simply love this book

Simply love this book! I have a high admiration for our current President, Obama and reading about his childhood, his struggles as a color child in mix family, his missing father and the impact his parents marriage had on the way he perceives is very interesting. I can definitely understand better his life now, and why he got so far and became the most important man in the world!
