Review
"The rocky isolation of Bruny Island and the vast, spreading whiteness of Antarctica are presented in loving detail by an author who clearly knows and respects her landscapes. These descriptions serve as a powerful complement to this moving story of changing family dynamics and the isolation and solitude found in nature and within ourselves." —Booklist

The Lightkeeper's Wife
By Brad Cloban
The author obviously has a passionate personal relationship with the antarctic. She takes the reader on a 'natural historical' journey whilst telling the story. Actual story-line becomes a little boring, though, in the author's attempt to 'draw it out' too long.

Most unusual but interesting and well worth a read
By Diana M. Hockley
This is an interesting and unusual book. Mary is dying, but is determined to manage a pilgrimage to Bruney Island off Tasmania, where she spend many years as the wife of the lighthouse keeper. Her daughter is outraged that she has chosen to do this, but her sons are supportive. She rents a cottage on the island and persuades the young ranger who is hired to look after her as well as the tourists who camp on the island, to take her to several places of importance to her when she lived there. How she changes the young mans life and that of her children is one of the outcomes of the visit. What happens and the secret which Mary is harbouring makes up the tale. I was a little disappointed that Mary's husband is not shown clearer, but the story itself is as old as time.
A very pleasant and intriguing book, depicting a part of Australia which I particularly like.
Good read.

`We are all just a breath away from memories.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Mary Mason is an elderly woman in poor health, living alone in Hobart, Tasmania. The delivery of a letter acts as a catalyst: she chooses to return to Bruny Island and to memories of her past. Mary has a decision to make, about a secret she's kept for decades. And while she's considering whether to destroy the letter or pass it on to the person it's addressed to, she'd rather be on Bruny Island where she once lived as the lighthouse keeper's wife. She feels closer to Jack, her long-dead husband, there.
Mary's three adult children Jan, Gary and Tom and her grand-daughter Jacinta are worried. Leon Walker, a ranger on the island, has agreed to look in on Mary each day, but the rest of the time she'll be alone.
The novel alternates between Mary and Tom. Mary has memories and secrets from the past to consider, while Tom has some issues of his own. Tom's marriage foundered while he overwintered in Antarctica some years earlier, and he's yet to find his way back to a happy life.
Many aspects of this story are predictable and while I felt some sympathy for Tom and for Mary, it wasn't enough to keep me caught up in their stories. What did hold my attention, though, were the beautiful descriptions of both Bruny Island and of Antarctica.
A lightly entertaining rainy day read, which has made me want to visit Bruny Island.
