Davidson makes the point in his introduction that even those well versed in the sport of hockey can learn -- the greats are great because they never stop learning and practicing. The technical knowledge contained within the book is fantastic but is not overwhelming due to the highly visual presentation.... This book is laid out in a way that even a beginner like me can follow it through and get some good ideas -- or at least an understanding of what is happening in the good 'ole hockey game. However, the advanced beginner or aspiring player would get a lot more from it. Davidson has laid out the topics from gearing up to skating essentials down to dekeing and deception to breakaways and all the puckhandling, passing and shooting you can wish for in between. About the Author
Ron Davidson played on Canada's national team at the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980. He has directed hockey camps, schools and clinics in Canada, the U.S. and throughout Europe, and he has directed schools and clinics for the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes and Ottawa Senators. His hockey-skill philosophies and teachings are seen on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada in a segment called "Think Hockey."
Ron MacLean is the host of the iconic Hockey Night in Canada and co-host of "Coach's Corner." One of Canada's most beloved sportscasters, MacLean has hosted events such as the Olympics and has won eight Gemini Awards, which honor the best in Canadian television. He is a prominent supporter of minor hockey and is a Hockey Canada certified level 5 referee.

A Great Reference

As an adult beginner hockey player, I really needed a book or guide that could introduce me to the fundamentals of hockey in an easy-to-understand manner. When you are just scrimmaging out there on the ice, you don't really see the subtleties that make the experienced players better. That's why I was glad to have found this book. It takes you through the fundamentals of hockey playing, from hockey stops to stickhandling to advanced dekes, and explains them about as good as you can without actually being on the ice. In particular, I found the figures to be very helpful; in fact, I don't really see how a beginner can understand these moves without some sort of illustration. There are lots of techniques in the book, and hard to take in all at once for a beginner. That's why, after having read the book cover to cover, I will continue to use it as a reference to concentrate on a handful of techniques at a time. I've even taken it out on the ice during open hockey practice to work on the moves in the book. My only recommendation for improving the book is to include even more figures to illustrate some of the techniques, as these are invaluable for understanding. All in all, the book is highly recommended for anyone looking for improve their hockey fundamentals and become a better player.

Great Info, Simple, Lots of Pictures

I'd consider myself an intermediate hockey player and found this to be a helpful and entertaining book.
Rather than describe skills and technique with blocks of text, the book starts with a crisp, high-resolution photo of NHL action showing the technique, then breaks it down with a concise instruction. I did pick up a few good ideas and tips for saucer passing, quick shots, and skating.
Also, it's a beautiful book. The pictures are gorgeous. You can flip through it like a coffee table book rather than just read and re-read pages of words.
Recommended for any hockey player, especially for parents of younger kids who play. Seeing star NHL'ers demonstrating the technique in an actual NHL game would be a lot more inspirational for them.

Son is a player, but does not read it.

My son was very happy to get the book, but did not spend a lot of time with the book, because it is a little too technical for him. However, it is an interesting book full of good ideas on how to build skills. For coaches, not 10 year old boys.
